MEMPHIS STAKES. Memphis, Term., December 3. Secretary M. N. Macfarlan of the New Memphis Jockey Clab today announced ten stakes to close January 3, 1903, eight of which will ba deoided at the coming Bpring meeting of 1904. The club has increased the value of the following stakes: The Montgomery Handicap, from ,000 added to ,500 added, and, in addition, the club will present the winner with a valuable silver cup ; The Cotton Steeplechase Handicap, from ,000 added to ,E00 added ; The Memphis Stakes, two-year-olds, from ,CO0 added to ,000 added. At the nest spring meeting no purse will be offered to which less than 00 will be added by the club and no handicap withless than 00 added. Following is a complete list of stakes offered that close January 3, 1903 : Five are for two-year-olds in 1903; The Tennessee Derby, 1934; Tennessee Oaks, 1904; The Gaston Hotel Stakes, 1903; The Ardelle Stakes, fillies; The Memphis Stakes; The Hotel Qayoso Stakes, ,000 added, one mile. Four stakes for three-year-olds and upward, The Montgomery Handicap, ,500 added and silver cup, outj-and ono-siziedoth miles, estimetea Value independent of cup, ,500; The Peabody Hotel Handicap, ,000 added, nine furlongs, estimated value, ,500; The Tennessee Brewing Company selling Stakes, ,000 added, seven furlongs, estimated value, ,500; The Cotton Steeplechase Handicap, ,500 added, about two miles, estimated value, ,000. The Tennessee Derby and Oaks for 190S that closed last January will be decided at the coming meeting. Declarations in these two stakes must be made on or before January 2, 1903.
