Mackay has retired permanently from the turf. Mr. Mackay has found that the vast business left by his father will require all of his time in future, so that he will be unable to devote any attention to the. welfare of a racing stable. Mr. Mackay has made several nominations for tho rich Saratoga, stakes to be run in 1904 and 1905, however, and it may-develop by that time that he will have a chance, to return to the sport of kings, over which he is still an ardent enthusiast. Mr. Mackay still owns a breeding establishment, which he has no idea of relinquishing and at which Banastar is the leading stallion. Word comes from Aiken, S. C, that very likely the winter mecca of horsemen asked for from The Jockey Club will bo located there. R. P. Garrett, the well known horseman and breeder at that point, just to hand with racing stock, brings the news of a winter twenty-day meeting at or near the vast holdings of William C. Whitney at Aiken, S. C, next year being assured. He says Messrs Whitney and August Belmont have already secured an option on property which could not be designed for anything else but a race track. The impression at Aiken is that the Vanderbilt interests will also assist in promoting the scheme. Accordingto Garrett, tho intention is to make the seat of this latest race track promotion of Mr. Whitneys an American winter Carlsbad, where the idea of thorough Americanism can be worked out and New Yorkers can enjoy a salubrious winter rustication right at home without recourse to the Occident. Mr. Clarence Mackay first conceived ;the project while on a visit to the Aiken, S. C, polo grounds six years ago, at a time before he was known prominently on the turf. Garrett declares that there can be littlo doubt of a race track being built by the New York millionaires now having winter seats located at or near Aiken, S. C.
