PERSIMMON A GREAT SIRE The statistics of the English racing season jus ended reveal some figures of interest to horseme tho world over and shows it to be a year of excei tional activity. Of late the winning sire has bee regarded with much more importance than th winning owner, and has annually befn the subjec of astute calculation. This year Persimmon carrie off tho palm with sixteen races, amonntTto tt 810-antl-eontribtited -by eightTeprasttucfirives. St Simon was a close second, nineteen gets of his win ning forty-five races, worth in all 38,621. On Per simmons list was Sceptre, who won four out of th five classic events and thereby placed the stallioi on the top notch. R. S. Bievier, owner of Sceptre, heads the list o owners with a total of 23,685 for seventy-one races Of this sum 23,137 alone was won by Sceptre. Nex to Sievier comes Col. Harry McCalmont, whosi death was announced recently, with. 18,114 tota winnings ; his colors appearing in 112 races, twenty of which he won. In third place is Sir John Maple who has won more races on tho turf than any mar in England. His total winnings were 17,912, and his horses were successful in sixty-sevon out of 30! contests. The amounts won by other leading turf men were: A. James, 16,575: Duke of Portland 14,305; John Gubbins, 14,109; Duke of Devon shire, 13,575; Sir James Miller, 10,965; Sir Wal die Griffithj 10,634; Sir E. Vincent, 9,753; and the Earl of Derby, 8,524. In the list of winning horses Scoptre is on top with the sum already mentioned, but had Rising Glass captured the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown, worth 9,675, Colonel McCalmont would have finished in the load. As it was Rising Glass won 12,346 and made second place. Other cracks who won big amounts were: Cheers, 9,765; Veles, 8,682; Rabelais, 7,774; Rock Sand, 7,474; William the Third, 7,120; Fowlingpieco, 5,510; Ard Patrick, 6,455; St. Windeline, 5,382; Royal George, 4,125, and Flotsam, 3,201. W. Waugh, trainer for Sir John Maple, is at the head of the most successful list of his class. W. Lane is tho champion jockey with 170 winning mounts.
