GOSSIP OF THE TURF. Ed Botay, one of the first men in this country to make a business of handicapping the races has arrived at New Orleans. Mr. Botay has been going to New Orleans for many years. This is his twenty-first year there. Eotay has bean a close student of the game and in past years accumulated a fortune playing the races. He was much impressed with the improvements that have been made at Now Orleans since last seaeon. He said: "When I first came to New Orleans the races were very ordinary. On a nice day I have seen less than 200 people on the grounds. In those days the purses amounted to less than 00. Naturally, the sport did not amount to much. They wero a sorry lot of dogs that ran. I have seen the game develop and grow all these years and am much pleased with the improvement."
