WORTH STAKE ENTRIES. t 6 The "Worth Jockey Club stake book was is- 5 sued for circulation yesterday by Secretary Edward Jasper. It contains the nominations to eight feature events for the spring meet-ing of twenty-one days, commencing "Wednesday, April 29, and closing Thursday, May 21. There are eight events on the added money plan, ranging in value from ,000 to ,000, or an average of ,730 for each. This is an in- c crease in the offerings, and is in line with the policy of the "Worth management. Follow- ing is a list of the stakes: Added Est. t Stakes. Dist Money.Value. "Worth Handicap 1 l-16m ,000 ,400 Powers Handicap 1 1-8 m 3,000 4,200 , Calumet Stakes 1 l-16m 2,500 3,460 1 Orland Stakes 1 m 1,000 2,320 i Flying Handicap 3-4 m 1,000 2,070 Evergreen Stakes 5-S m 1,500 2,500 Admiral Stakes 4 1-2 f 1,000 1,790 May Blossom 4 1-2 f 1,000 1,740 A feature of Secretary Jaspers book is that he fixes the dates on which the several stakes 1 are to be decided, a thing that- is done by none orte TocaTlracihg" associations except 1 ing "Washington Park. The "Worth Handicap is fixed for the opening day attraction, being booked for Wednesday, April 29; the Flying Handicap is fixed for Saturday, May 2; the 1 May Blossom Stakes, for Thursday, May 7; the Orland Stakes, for Saturday, May 9; the Admiral Stakes, for Thursday, May 14; the Powers Handicap, for Saturday, May 16; -the Evergreen Stakes, for Monday, May J8; i and the Calumet Stakes, for Thursday, May 1 21. Of the eight stakes four are for three- 1 year-olds and upward, the "Worth, Flying, : Orland and Powers; one is for three-year-olds, the Calumet; and three for two-year-olds, the May Blossom, Admiral and Ever-green. The Orland is a selling stake, the May Blossom, for fillies, the Admiral for i colts and geldings and the Evergreen for youngsters of both sexes. 1 The stakes have an average in nominations of sixty, a good showing for a northern meet- Ing beginning in April. A glance at the list ; of nominators shows that some of the most important stables in the west are repre- sented. It also shows some of the best ma- terial in this section of the country. Of w the two-year-olds nothing can be said this j early they are a mere guess, at least until -they have been tested in the crucible of actual racing. Of course they have shown : something in their trials, else they would not "be entered in stakes; but It is the experience -of trainers that sometimes the most promis- ing of youngsters fall short when it comes to racing, while less promising ones develop into useful and not infrequently superior rac- ing animals. : Secretary Jasper has great hopes for the ; racing at the coming meeting on account of : the forward condition of the stables in train- . ing. It is a matter of general comment that j the animals in course of preparation at the : -various training grounds were never more ! advanced toward a race than this season. At this time last year they were all behind from ; two weeks to a month, on account of the bad -weather. Now the horses, in training at every point are within two weeks of a race. This is taken by Mr. Jasper as an indication of high class racing earlier in the year than usual. A number of improvements have been begun at the "Worth track. The principal one is in the line of draining the grounds. This work is well under way and when completed, will provide amply for seasons as unpropi- 1 t 6 5 c t , 1 i 1 1 1 i 1 1 : i 1 ; w j : : ; : . j : ! ; 1 tious as that of 1902, when rain fell nearly "V every day. Additional stable room has been tl provided by the building of a new barn which m will accomodate upward of 100 horses. As S the Worth plant is prettily situated, little has fi been done in the way of artificial beautifying of the grounds. Word has been received E from track superintendent Lyman Davis, that he will soon be on hand to begin the work of preparing the course. With any kind I of favorable weather conditions, it is ex- pected that this expert in track work will j have the course in shape for fast time when I the meeting opens. Secretary Jasper announces that a number j of additional stakes for the fall meeting I at Worth will be opened and closed in the month of July. Among the good horses entered in the various stakes are McChesney, Lucien Apple- C by, Savable, Abe Frank, Aladdin, Au Revoir, j Evea G., Hermencia, Flying Torpedo, Run- 5 nels, Wyeth, The Lady, Caliban, Gilfain, j Telamon, St. Marcos, John Peters, Topsoil, c BeauOymbhiae",OweBt6riranter, Sam FuV i en, Otis, Schwabe, Port Royal, The Don, Terra Firma, Semper "Vigilans, Hargis, -r Thane, Harrow, Nitrate, Gregor K., Fa- i vonius, W.
