Safeguard, under a good ride, easily wore down Joe Martin in the last eighth, winning as his rider pleased. The latter took kindly to the going and showed much speed, but tired fast when challenged by the winner. Zepho ran in greatly improved form and finished gamely. Muresca assumed an easy command when turning for home and simply ran away from the field, winning as her rider pleased. Americano made up ground and outstayed If You Dare in the last eighth struggle. The latter ran to his best form and had no mishaps, but tired a trifle in the closing strides. Hoodwink came with a rush at the end. Sam Fullen stood a long stretch drive well. C. B. Campbell ran a dull race and can do better. Mimo fell away badly beaten when a furlong out. Mayor Johnson showed much early speed. Winner — Ch. c, by Macduff — Manola Mason trained by S. C. Hildreth. Went to post at 3:25. At post 14 minutes. Start fair. Won in a canter; second handily. McChesney was not called on until just before turning for home, where he moved up fast and easily went to the front when a furlong out, winning under mild restraint. Gregor K. stood a long stretch drive gamely after showing much speed. He met with no mishaps and ran to his best form. Hargis ran an excellent race in going none too much to his liking. He was under keen pressure all through the last quarter and stuck to his work gamely and was gradually wearing down Gregor K. at the end. Flying Torpedo tired palpably when a furlong out, running in the center of the track. Rolling Boer made up ground in the stretch run and finished going fast. Epicure fell away beaten just before reaching the final eighth post. Linguist was a keen contender until just after turning for home, where he tired fast and was eased up. Dick Bernard easily closed up on St. Paula, after turning for home and, passing to the front with little effort, won as his rider pleased. Katie Powers made up ground fast in the last quarter and finished going fast. St. Paula tired rapidly when a furlong out after .showing much speed. Handsome Florry was well beaten when entering the final furlong. Susie Christian showed, some early speed. Manshak retired when entering the stretch. The track was hardly to his liking.
