Shot Gun practically held command of the situation throughout, forcing the pace under a pull and shaking off Blackstock with great ease in the stretch run. He is a crackerjack sprinter and looks it. Blackstock displayed brilliant and enduring speed at the weight, fighting it out at the end with rare gameness. Dublin essayed to keep on even terms with the other two, and held his own next to the rail for three furlongs when he dropped back and was unexpectedly quitting all over at the end. Old Englands bad race was foreshadowed by the betting. He was outrun even from the the first, and tailed off a hopeless last after going the first quarter. Ink, hard held and with poor judgment trailing in the wake of the leaders and much bespattered with mud in consequence, was so much the best that when called on on the stretch turn he flashed into the lead in a twinkling and came home alone and easing up. Orloff ran in improved form in the sloppy going, was always a prominent contender and came away in decisive fashion from the others when squared away for the finish. Black Hussar made a promising effort at the weights, and is a reported good one. Star and Garter raced into a pronounced lead at the half and suddenly fell away. Dark Planet ran a bad race. Miss Dorothy is evidently a non-stayer. Scratched— 396003North Brook, 101. Overweights— Dark Planet, 4 pounds. Ink, show, out. Orloff, show, 3 to 1. Black Hussar, show, 8 to 5. Won easily; second driving Aristocracy led unextended throughout, winning all the way with ridiculous ease and is evidently a crackerjack. Dimple was a much better filly today than her recent performances would warrant and at the end singled out from the field with a rush. Toledo, away badly steadily improved her position, running in the deep going next to the rail throughout and * finished like a cyclone. Montreson, after a great display of early speed, tired and was swerving in the last furlong. Moharib, still running green and unhandy, was outrun to the stretch, where he began to wear down those in front of him, is still on the bitr side and there is room for plenty of improvement. Conjurer is a reputed crackerjack and this race does not furnish a true line on his capacity. Pulsus also must be accorded another trial before he is condemned. Africander quickly took a prominent position and really indulged both Hermis and Articulate with the lead for three furlongs, he was running that strongly, and on the backstretch the great colt drew to the front, only to be joined by the redoubtable mudlark Herbert, which put up a game but unavailing fight to the end with the winner, which was palpablv bearing out all through the long stretch drive, but not enough to affect the result. Herbert, under Odoms alertness at the start and superb handling throughout the race, ran up to his best form in footing that particularly favored him. He was carried out and probably impeded to some extent by the winner at the end. Hunter Raine, nearly left at the post and trailing absolutely last for half the Journey, closed a stupendous gap, and the way he ran past his field in the last three furlong was simply phenomenal. Major Daingerfield failed to get away well and Bullman drove him along from the start, making up a lot of ground early, but he tired in the last quarter and was a lucky fourth.. City Bank was a good horse today, and he also suffered at the start and was crowded back to last and closed a tremendous gap. Igniter, Colonel Bill and Yardarm ran well up for six furlongs, but never seriously threatened. Articulate quit after going the first three furlongs. Hermis went a very good mile before he succumbd and was then pulled up. Won easily; second the same. James V. indulged the pacemaker until rounding the stretch turn, where he forged into the lead on the inside and came home alone. Dutiful finished very fast and appeared to have come from a long way back on the turn. Yo San, a filly of great speed, held on in improved style. Great Eastern ran prominently and as usual fails to stay. Modred was going fast at the end. Step Aside showed sudden improvement. Falernian looks like a good one and evidently did not run up to what he is capable of. Juvenal Maxim swerved at the start and ran unkindly throughout and probably disliked the going. Raglan, a beautiful filly from the Madden barn, trailed her field and only cantered the journey after getting away badly. At post 1 minute. Start good. Won driving; second easily. Colonsay developed unexpectedly good form on the grass course and after trailing right in behind Mackey Dwyer for seven furlongs he drew up on the outside and outstayed the latter at the end. Mackey Dwyer forced a fast and particularly tiring pace in the wet and soggy going and did not have much left with which to stall off the winners challenge Rightful was the only other serious contender and ran a fast and game race, tiring nalpably under the weight in the last furlong. The Rival fell hopelessly out of the race early but closed up much ground in the last half and was evidently not quite ready. The Carmelite went well for about three furlongs. Charles Elwood. evidently handicapped by the eoinff. made a bad showing and appeared a beaten horse before rouding the first turn. slratfned— 39767 Carbuncle, 111; 3D203 Sergeant, 111; 39644 Surmise, 110; 39543Leader, 107; 39291 Flying Buttress, 106.
