Winner — Br. f, by Altamax — Picnic trained by C. T. Patterson. Went to post at 2:30. At post 2 minutes. Start good. Won easily; second the same. Rowena stripped light and overdone looking and as usual it was with considerable of an effort that she kept within striking distance of the leaders in the first quarter. Particularly favored by the soft going, however, she commenced to gain rapidly on the turn and won going away fast in the last hundred yards. Sweet Gretchen is a grand looking filly and was probably not keyed up, especially in view of her having been on the ailing list quite recently. She figured prominently throughout in the race and raced Into a good lead when the field straightened out for home, but tired right at the end. White Plumes inside rail position in the worst going found her unable to hold her position and she was repeatedlv interfered with, eventually having to close a big gap in the last quarter, but finished like a cyclone and should have been second today. Letola was a prominent contender until in the last sixteenth, where she tired. Petunia fell away after a good three furlongs. Funny Side went a remarkably fast half and is worth remembering. At post 2 minutes. Start straggling. Won driving; second the same. Dark Planet got away poorly and made up a lot of ground on the outside, closing up with a rush at the end. Cincinnatus jumped into the lead at the start and easily outran bis field up to the last few strides, when DeSouza saw the winner coming and nearly fell off and was beaten out in the last stride. The horse ran away another mile before he was brought to a standstill. Nevermore tired badly at the end of a seven furlong dose attendance on the pacemaker. Rostand closed a big gap from a bad sendoff and should have been third. Early Eve was crowded on the first turn and was going well at the end. Gibson Light gained half a dozen lengths in the last half. Turnpike ran a bad race. Ella Snyder was evidently handicapped by the going. Condon was particularly favored by the cuppy going, worked through a rough journey, was carried out on the first turn and did not find an opening until in the last furlong, where he shot through on the inside, locking horns with the redoubtable Hunter Raino, beating him in the last stride. The latter got away slowly and was whipped up into the field on the first turn, where he held his own In the deep going arid finished out the race with a remarkable display of gameness. Thorneycroft, badly ridden, went wide on all the turns, seriously interfering with other horses at different times and was decisively outridden in the final stretch drive or he would hav» been a close contender at the end. Tugai Bey ran a steady, fast race throughout and Is a greatly improved colt. Cardinal Wolsey made the running under a pull for a mile and fell awawy only In the final sixteenth. Astaritas preliminary was encouraging and, getting away well, she indulged Minotaur with the lead to the half, where she went to the front, coming home an easy winner. Sir Voor-hies developed sudden and unexpected speed and stamina today. Gravina worked her way through the big field on the inside, finishing fast, while always in the worst going. Her race was a great improvement. Eugenia Burch ran in close quarters throughout and put up a game effort, but seems out of place in sprints. Invincible was pocketed on the back-stretch and went around the field on the stretch turn, closing up very fast at the end and would have been third in two more strides. . St. Daniel finished close up and held a prominent position from the start to finish. Minotaurs early effort to outrun Astarita told on him at the end and his race was distinctly good. Luminosity lay close up in the early running and when straightened for home finished fast, coming away easily right at the end. Thistle Heather was held together in the first part of the race and moved up fast when beginning the last quarter, but fell away again when nearing the finish. Short Cake, poorly ridden and running on the heels of horses in front of her at the half, finally came around on the outside and was gaining rapidly in the stretch. Harbor has suddenly developed early speed, was crowded back at the half, came again and finished close up. Dinah Shad forced a stiff pace to the stretch and held on unexpectedly well. Lux Casta waited on the leaders to the stretch, where she closed up with a tremendous burst of speed and passed Counterpoise in the last fifty yards as if he were standing still. The latter was pulled double in behind the pacemaker for half the journey, then went to the front without much effort and seemed like a sure winner in the stretch; but tired suddenly in the last furlong and swerved badly under the whip. He ran in great contrast to his preceding race, where he fought out a long driving finish in the gamest possible manner. King Pepper, heavily backed today, got away well with a stable boy on his back and ran a remarkably fast and game race at the weights. The others were far outclassed.
