Morning Star made a show of her field, showed much early speed, was never fully extended and Phillips had her well in hand at the end. Helgesen kept Docile in the good going for the entire trip, but she was inclined to sulk when it came to a drive and pinned her ears back when he drew his whip. Trossachs ran in improved form. Preakness was anchored in the deep going next to the inside rail all the way. This ruined whatever chances he might have had. Interrogation ran fairly well only. Scratched 42986Lady Free Knight, 107. Mauser was interfered with at the first turn and had to go to the outside to get up, went around the leaders at the far turn, caught Tioga tiring in the stretch run and outgamed ; her at the end. The latter showed the most early speed, but was made too much use of in the first half in racing Ponca and Lampoon into submission and tired. Sarah Maxim was in a pocket for the first half and was crowded down into the deep going in the last furlong. She bumped into Lampoon a couple of times in the last sixteenth. Mamselle broke well in motion, but quit after going a half. This was not her race. Scratched 42931 Jove, 94. Overweights Lampoon. 1 pound: Hegira, 1. Mauser, show, 6 to 5. Tioga, show, 2 to 1. Rainland shouldered his weight in grand style and wTon like a good colt, went through his field on the backstretch and laid in behind Wreath of Ivy until on the turn into the homestretch and came away cantering in the last sixteenth. Exclamation ran well, but just lasted long enough to stall off a challenge from Lady Free Knight. The latter dropped back at the far turn, but came again at the end and would have been second in another stride. Wreath of Ivy tired in the last furlong and Pollak did not persevere with her when beaten. Scratched 430032Duncan, 102. Corrected weights Rainland, 119. Overweights Wreath of Ivy, 1 pound.
