Bill Massie, suddenly improved and favored by the soft going, went to the front on the far turn and easily held his own to the end. El Piloto came with a belated rush in the last furlong and ran an extra good race. Telephone showed suDerior speed, but tired in the closing drive after a sharp brush to hold the winner on the far turn, and could have been second if reserved the least bit in the early running. Elie was inadequately handled from start to finish and ran a good race, always in the deepest going. Anirad got away poorly. Brick Fowler went a good half and was probably short. Effervescence got away badly but closed a big gap in the worst going and finished fast, getting up in the last stride. Gottlieben forced the pace and sustained her superior speed in improved style. Caroburn followed the leader closely, but could never get up, although she held on well in the closing drive. Kentish Shrew, reported to have worked well, began slowly and ran a steady race, gaining slowly at the end. Wistaria can do better and tired badly in the last quarter. Floriana Belle ran up into a contending position and then tired. Lady Atheling was not ready, had no chance at the start and finished pulled up. Scratched 12838 Targette, 112. U. moved up fast when turning for home and finished gamely. Cougar, poorly handled, had a rough journey to the stretch, where he closed well. Plan ran a bad race, was inadequately handled and unable to raise a respectable gallop on a track to his particular liking. Expedient had scant chance with his small rider and fell hopelessly out of the earlv running, coming, as usual, with a tremendous rush in the homestretch. Boutonniere went an extra good six furlongs and is worth remembering. Sue Johnson liked the going and was either short or unable to stay. Overweights I. O. TL, 1 pound; Cougar, 1; H. P. Kane, 5. Won easily; second the same. Lord Melbourne ran as if he outclassed his field, moved up leisurely at the half and came away at his riders will in the stretch run. Reeves practically forced the pace for nearly six furlongs and held on well after a trying effort to beat the winner when straightened out for home. Diderot was taken up on the first turn and reserved to the stretch, where he finished well but swerved badly. The track was not quite heavy enough to suit him. Dorice ran a game race and finished well. Somenos -tired badly and was evidently handicapped by the muddy footing. Loyal S. retired early. Illowaho was overweighted and never dangerous. Won handily; second driving. F. E. Shaw forced the pace throughout, decisively taking up the running after going the first furlong and held sway to the end, always in the deepest going,- and was much the best. Miss Betty ran up to her best form and liked the track, was always prominent and put up a game stretch run. Padua pulled up lame and was cut down and was badly messed about and pocketed when making his final run. Dargin got away slowly and raced up on terms with the winner and appeared to have a. safe lead over the others when beginning the last furlong, tiring badly .however, at the end. Sol Smith, in an effort to place him, was nearly jerked off his feet and he failed badly in the stretch, ran a bad race and can do much better. Overweights Dr. Birdsall, 4 pounds. F. E. Won driving; second easily. Rey Dare, lucky and skillfully handled, ran within striking distamce to the last turn, where he moved up with a sustained rush in which he wore Greenock down, just getting up in the final stride. The latter ran a good race and probably owes his defeat to an excessive early, effort to take up the running and may have been a trifle short. Prestolus showed fine form in the going. Getting away badly he made up ground rapidly on the far turn under the whip and stood a long stretch drive gamely. Silver Fizz finished fast and would have been third in a couple of strides. Galanthus was poorly handled and failed to make any headway in the stretch. Silurian ran a bad race. Quiet failed to stay after a good display of early speed. Rey Dare, show, evens; Greenock, show, 7 to 10. Prestolus, show, 6 to 1. Silurian, show, 1 to 2.
