GOSSIP OF THE TURF. There has been much conjecture about the status of "Boots" Durnell and Lester Reiff on account of the coming Ascot Park meeting at Los Angeles being under the jurisdiction of the Pacific Jockey Club. Durnell and Lester Reiff are under the ban of French and English jockey clubs. The California Jockey Club has recognized the rulings of foreign jockey clubs, but this is not the case with the Western Jockey Club, that controls racing in the middle west. This organization permitted Durnell to race. One of the first things that came up at the recent confab of turf magnates at Los Angeles was this matter. Ascot managers admitted they were against it, and explained that Durnell had been invited to come to Los Angeles, as well as all owners in good standing with the Western Jockey Club. President Williams argued that it would be a good scheme to compromise with Durnell for money consideration, but after discussion it was decided, in view of entanglements, Durnell and Reiff be granted permission to race this season only.
