Soufriere, forcing the pace throughout, outstayed Young Pepper in the closing drive and won going away. The latter singled himself out of the ruck in the stretch run and finished fast and was the only serious contestant. Harbor got away poorly and went wide on the turns, but made up ground in the stretch. Effervescence broke slowly and was really never dangerous, although she made up some ground in the last quarter, running on the inside in deep going. Wistaria is in very moderate form. Hogarth, nearly left, closed a big gap. Hoceo is improving and was making up ground rapidly in the closing strides. The Hawaiian, after a good display of speed, failed to stay and can do better. U., away last, worked an outside route to the stretch, where he finished with a rush and won going away. Mountebank made the running for half the journey when he unexpectedly fell away, closing up again in the stretch under a weak and procrastinating ride. Merwan showed plenty of speed and just saved third place, tiring badly at the end. Past Master, away poorly, and in close quarters on the first turn, closed a tremendous gap in the last half and just failed to get up for third money in a whirlwind finish. Billy Moore went in improved form, after meeting serious early interference. Evander is a speedy non-stayer and held on at a good pace for over six furlongs. Boutonniere can do better. Constable emphasized his present bad form on this track. Scratched 43187 Hungarian, 106; 43165 H. P. Kane, 102. Overweights Evander, 1 pound. I. O. U., show, 1 to 2. Mountebank, show, 3 to 5. Phil Archibald trailed the winner with seemingly plenty in reserve from start to finish and ran a good race. Shot Gun ran right along from the start and it was a bare moment before he had his field completely squandered. Martin rode a confident looking race and eased him up in the last furlong. Kenilworth ran nearly up to his best form, followed the winner closely throughout and finished a fast going second. San Nicholas ran a surprisingly good race at the weights, in spite of the going and sustained his brilliant speed gamely throughout. Ahumada unexpectedly fell away in the last quarter and can do a great deal better, but received a bad ride. Scratched 43179 Royal Rogue, 107; 43191 Glendenning, 101; 43179 Muresca, 96. Arcade, lucky at the start, trailed the leaders closely to the stretch, where he drew to the front cantering, and is a superior class performer in mud. Jockey Club made the running and forced a stiff pace from the start, putting up a game fight in the final drive home. Hainault, after nearly getting left at the post, closed a tremendous gap and finished an eased up third. Mimo went well throughout and can win when placed right. Bill Massie made up a lot of ground from a very bad start. Louis Wagner again failed to stay. Scratched 43180 Captivate, 110; 43143 Harry Thatcher, 110; 43163 Emily Oliver, 100. Forest King ran in close attendance on the front division, to the far turn, where he moved up like a streak, coming away decisively in the stretch. The Fretter got away poorly, but quickly raced up into prominent contention, and after a sharp set-to with the winner when turning for home, he fell away and finished a good second, with the others beaten off. Achilles, the pacemaker for six furlongs, tired in the final drive and just saved third place. Cougar, which-found the distance too short, was closing up at the end like a cyclone. Stilicho ran a steady race and will be heard from. Hellas went a good six furlongs. Hlo-waho was apparently handicapped by the muddy going. Scratched 43180 Colonel Van, 102: Overweights Stilicho, 1 pound; Hellas, 1; The Way, 1. Forest King, show, 1 to 2. The Fretter, show, 3 to 5. Achilles, show, 7 to 10.
