GOSSIP OF THE TURF. "Bub" May, acting for a Memphis cotton merchant who contemplates entering the racing game, has ourchased from J. "V. Shipp of Sunny Slope Farm, Midway, Ky., a bay colt by Gay Lad for ,500. J. O. Keene claims to have an option on the colt and has left to put his claim before the owner in Kentucky. A sensational quarter negotiated by the youngster is responsible for the demand made by both May and Keene. J. C. Milam, the Lexington turfman, has sold the stallion Owenton, by Owas Georgia Kinney, for a private figure to Thaw Brothers, of Dallas, Texas. "With him went the mare Golden Harvest. The new owner purposes to found a stud in the Lone Star State. Robert Tucker, trainer for S. S. Brown, will not go east next season until after the close of the "Washington Park meeting. Little Waugh, the youngster who rode a few races in the colors of James R. Keene, "will ride in France next year, having just signed a contract with William Donohue, the American trainer who has charge of a , prominent stable there. Waugh was apprenticed to Mr. Keene, but ttie contract ex-Itpires January 1 next. B An. arrangement was completed last Tues-HjrtimhLen R. C. Brien and J. Meade estate, by which the place will continue as a nursery for thoroughbreds. Mr. Brien will conduct the farm as Superintendent and Secretary, a position which he occupied under Gen. W. H. Jackson and also under his son, W. H. Jackson, Jr. The Commoner will remain at the head of the stud, and the young stallion Mont dOr will I also remain at the farm. Both stallions will be used for outside service as well as for the Belle Meade mares. J. Taylor, the well-known trainer, who made a successful campaign in 1902 on the western tracks with Maggie Felix, has signed a contract to train the extensive racing stable of H. A. Bngman, breeder o Hermis, during the season of 1904. Engman will have a large string next season, headed by the two-year-old filly Tootsey Mack, a prominent Oaks candidate and half sister to Hermis. Barney Schreiber is negotiating with Vic Gilbert and may purchase the contract held by the latter on the services of Hildebrand. The little fellow is riding in good form and would be a useful addition to the St. Louis turfmans stable.
