Goddess of Night, on the outside, held a forward position lapped on the leaders from the start and, outstaying them in a long drive home, won going away. Tuckback moved up fast in the stretch after trailing close in behind the pacemaker and should improve. Saul of Tarsus, a fast non-stayer, forced the pace for five and a half furlongs before he succumbed, but ran as if short. Pure Dale quit in the last furlong and is evidently very moderate. Tamm, out of place in sprints, lost many lengths in the early running and closed up like a flash when beginning the last quarter, but could never get up and was eased up in the last sixteenth. Olinthus when good could easily beat this kind. Scratched 25724 Adnoor, 117. Goddess of Night, show, 7 to 5. Tuckback, show, 7 to 10. Saul of Tarsus, show, 2 to 1. SECOND RACE 5 1-2 Furlongs. At post 3 minutes. Start straggling. Won driving; second easily. Waterspout, improved and lucky at the start, forced the pace throughout and, being vigorously urged at the end, just got home in a tight fit. Et tu Brute, easily best, ran lapped on the winner from the start and only lost the race through a wide stretch turn and a lamentably weak finish by Daly. Oro Rose again failed to stay after a good display of early speed. Kentish Shrew, crowded directly after the start, moved up well in the last quarter. Kleinwood held on steadily in a forward position, finished eased up and will do better. Dolly "Varden, nearly left, closed a great gap. Gene Handlon looks like a cracker-jack and will be heard from. Won driving; second easily Hellas finally made good, got away in his stride and virtually forced the pace throughout, coming away fast when straightened for home, but was driving hard at the end. Chorus Boy ran in close quarters and suffered from crowding, gradually dropping back but finished with a tremendous rush in the stretch and was fast wearing the winner down. Evandes steadily improved his position after getting away poorly. Maresa went a good five furlongs before she tired. Saintly was nearly left and closed a big gap. His race, however, was comparatively poor and the cause was revealed after the race, he pulling up lame. Amasa is a non-stayer which finds this cuppy track tiring and will do better at Oakland. Oarsman, lucky at the start, enjoyed clear sailing and was patiently reserved within striking distance of the leader, moved up fast when straightened out for home and wore him down at the end, getting up in the last stride. Fossil forced the pace, which was very fast, throughout and sustained his speed with remarkable gameness and was probably unlucky to lose. Todays gruelling will not do him any good as he stripped light and drawn I for this, the best race of his career. Divina, a slow beginner, as usual suffered from early I interference and again came with a belated rush at the end. A first-class rider could bring I her home ahead of the best horses in training here. Incubator was a prominent contender I from the start, tiring slightly inthe last furlong and appeared to have been caught napping 1 lor third place. Mendon, ridden to waiting orders with disastrous result, was probably set too severe a task -for a first essay over a long distance of ground, but acquitted himslf creditably. Dainty can do better and failed to stay after going a fast six furlongs. Scratched 419162Montana Peeress, 97. Overweights Incubator, 5 pounds; Byron Rose, 2; Yellow Tail. 4. Oarsman, show, 1 to 3. Start good. Won easily; second the sanlev Telephone decisively outpaced and outstayed his field, and getting away in the lead Larsen made the most of his advantage and stayed there with him. Bombardier is fast rounding into form, was reserved in the early running close up and made good with an unexpected burst of speed at the end. Instructor made up ground steadily throughout and finished fast. Avenger was sent along at high pressure from the start and had never a moments . respite and may have sulked at the end. Stuyve broke in his stride and at once took a small lead over his field, which he maintained throughout, winning with a lot in reserve. He stripped on the big side, but far outclassed his opponents and this race should fit him to beat better ones. Axminster received a lucky start and ran in close attendance on the winner throughout and under Martins vigorous efforts beat Rosarie out for second place. The latter collided with Position at the start and got away badly, closing up a tremendous gap after a wide stretch turn. Position was prac-ticallv left and made up a lot of ground. Mac Gyle went a good six furlongs before he retired. Corrected weights Position, 109. Stuyve, show, 1 to 4. Axminster, show, 7 to 5. Rosarie, show, out.
