: ; 1 [ NO HOPE FOR SALEM. New York. March 12. The news that there Is a chance for the Bahim brack awttrr to Ih- fixed ap and racing- continued there is given but little credence here. In fart, some of ih.. oilicials on nected with the mrrttac last year have said de cisively that such a turn of affairs is out of the question. The venture has already lieeii limned Bp in the loss column by iis promoters. The loss was a heavy one. possibly more lhan a half million dollars. One of the heaviest sbx-k-hohlers said recently that he was through and that the venture was not worth one penny on the dollar. The future of Ihc BMgnkiceat course can only be surmised. The outstanding debts are trivial as compared with the cost, but the property will probably be taken over to settle these accounts. The track was an ill advised venture, there was little reason to lielieve that puritanical New Baglaad would ever support thoroughbred racing, and especially to the exienl of making such an expensive course a profitable venture. A course could have heea built for one half what the Sah in course cost thai would have served splendidly for racing iu New Baglaad, even under the most favorable conditions.
