ARCITE WORKS DERBY ROUTE IN 2:07i. About a Second Slower than Lieutenant Gibsons Record for the Race. Louisville. Ky.. May 2. — Two hundred or more persons saw Arcite run a mile and a quarter in -Mth at Churchill Downs this morning and the rerdlct was that, providing the track is fast Men-day next, the thirty third Kentucky Derby will go to George J. Long, as did the thirty-second, which was won by Sir Huon, and the eighteenth, in which Azra was tin- victor. Tin- track record for the mile and a quarter is 2: x !, made by Lieutenant Gibson when he won the Derby in 19 K . Ben Brush won in 2:07, in 18M and His F.niinence duplicated this in 1901. Thus the work of Arcite is phenomenal, and it makes certain the belief that he has no liking for a slow or holding track. A pacemaker accompanied Arcite from the quarter post. He ran the first eighth in 12. 1 lie quarter in 24*. tin- ball in Is., tive eighths in 1 : ] J and the three-quarters in 1:111. Another pacemaker joined him. he passed the seven eighths in 1:27.. and be turned the mile in 1:40 and mile and a quarter in 2:07*. He pulled up sound. Owners of other Derby eligiblcs were dazed. All admit that their hope rests alone in a track unsuited to Arcite. George I. Long was pleased, he said, but not surprised. Wool Sandals will be given a final workout tomorrow morning. Rcdgauutlet will get his first real trial tomorrow. Rcdgauutlet is expected to rule aa Serosal choice in the Derby. Fink Slar work--.l a mile and an eighth in 1 £8] and Holdfast went the Derby route in 2: 1 1. Lawrence P. Daly, a black colt by Lissak. out of Lva Dinsniorc. in the stable of Fr«*d Cook, worked a half in -I.r. and is a good one. He is a half-brother to Ancient Witch. Kathryn L. and Hand more.
