May 31. — Caaobte Laic, carrying he Barbarity colors, showed his tme merit when he won the second race at Woodbine today, running the Bve furlongs in 1 :* 1 Jt. Canehie Lake is by Compute and is a slashing good looker, but as yet does not iindeis-tand Jaai what is reipiired of him. His victory over Sir Balin was due alone to his superior quality. He is a sluggard and Diggins kept at him a-lt the way. He set a fast pace in the earh stages, but when making the turn into the home stretch, be went wide. This cost him three or lour lengths. Diggins here used the whip and Canobic Lake closed up again. He caught Sir Balin tiring at the end and got up and beat him out a neck. Trainer Wastes said after the race that he will rest the colt up until fall when be will lie given a special preparation for the Triumph Slakes at Brighton Beach. Lotus Later, two years age followers of the favorites fared well this afternoon, as four of the choices won The racing was keenly contested, a majority of the finishes being chase. Lllicott made a show of his opponents in the first race in which lie was a 1 in I favorite. Mark Antony IL. owned by ex jockey John Thomp son, who imported the colt from England, proved one of the surprises of the day. He was the extreme outsider iu the betting and in a driving finish won from Beside, another long shot. Sir Ralph, carry ing the Seagram colors and an odds-on favorite, finished fourth. This horse- suffered from interference and was in a pocket all of the last quarter. McDnniel claimed foul against Merlingo. which beat him out a neck for third place, but the claim was not allowed. Trainer William Phillips found it necessary to have Fred Cooks two year-old filly Ililma S. Burt dosir-oyed this morning. The filly injured her foot some days ago and decomposition bad set In. Two car loads of horses left for Montreal tonight. They included the stables of J. Stafford, J. W. Pangle and E. L. Talloy. thistle Ikt developed a serious lameness after his race yesterday and will have to be retired for some weeks. T. L.
