FERRISS GETS THE PRIZE. ST. VOLMA WINS THE LOUISVILLE STEEPLECHASE IN FAST TIME. Jockeys Archibald and Morrison Have a Duel With Whips During the Race and Are Suspended for Thirty Days. Louisville. Ky.. June 1. — J. C. Ferriss. Jr.s St. Totem won the Louisville Steeplechase over the full course, worth gl.lgfi to the winner, in sensational atyle, Pirate taking second dace from Kllhtee in tl.- tin.il stride. Although St. Yolnia won haudily t is backets experienced several minutes of uneasiness. For a while it appeared as if he would be disqualified because Archibald had engaged in a duel with whips, with Morrison, the rider of Killdoc. The hr.ttcr had been the leader fiM the first round of the course ami was still in front when St. Voluiii ranged alongside of him when approaching the eleent!t jump- Killdoe at this poim began carrying St. Volute wide. Archibald .slashed away at Morrison wilh his whip. Morrison struck back and they kept it up rVM as they went over Ihe last obstacle, where SU Volina parted company wilh the athera and won with ease. The judges had Ihe jockey s before ihoin Archibald claiming that Morrison had fie* lilM-ralely forced his mount against St. Volma. The judges eaheed the horses as they had finished and suspended both ji ckeys for thirty days, also fining Archibald sim. Naran came to grief at the water temp in the second turn of the course. Jockey llusion ranspod witli a slight shaking up. In addition to the stake race, a mile dash for gentlemen riders attracted interest aud brought to tha course- a fashionable throng. Mr. Faraum, ridden by Mr. Coliyer, a young Canadian, was the winner by a nose over Swiftwing, ridden hy Mr. Caldwell. Swiftwtog was the best and had he not been In the WOM going through the stretch would have won. The finishes in most of the races were close, the exception coining in the second, when Rebel Queen won by live lengths. The handicap at one mile was reduced by withdrawals to four starters, each of which had an army of followers ami the backing they were accorded was probably the heaviest of the meeting. He had to have medical atteution last night on account of ptomaine poisoning. C. II. Mailman was censured by the judges for allowing Jockey Graddy, ruled oft recently, to school , his horses during the morning hours. . St. Volmas performance was all the more meritorious be ause he reduced the long course record by marly three seconds in a wet and sloppy infield. The card for Monday presents no very striking; features but the horses in the various races class well together and with Flarney. Lady Baldur. Silver .. up: Demo. Western, Solly M. ; Mackerel, Ksther , Brown. Catherine 1 ; Dr. Heard. Killdoe, Lights; Out: Request, Envoy. Aleneon; Sea Salt.
