ORBY UNPLACED IN ATLANTIC STAKES Linacre, Earlston and Eastern Defeat Richard Crokers Derby Winner. Liverpool, July 20. Kiehard Crokers Orby, winner of the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, made ids fifth start ami met his lirst defeat as a three-year-old in the Atlantic Stakes of ,000 today. There were only four starters, all three-year-olds and the race was a thrilling one, the horses being heads apart at the finish of the mile and an eighth with Linacre lirst, Earlston second, Einstein third and Orby last. Orby was a hot favorite at odds-on. He came here last week from Mr. Crokers place in Ireland looking lit. It may have been that he was not quite on edge after his rest. Linacre is a bay colt by Wolfs Crag Lismaine and is owned by William Clark. Like Orby, he is a candidate for the St. Leger, which is to be run at Doncaster September 11, but the distance of this race is about one mile and three-quarters, which is to Orbys advantage. Linacre was third to Slieve Gallion in both the Craven Stakes and the Two Thousand Guineas and was second to Acclaim in the Newmarket Stakes witli Eastern third. Earlston linished seventh to Orby in the race for the Derby. He is a chestnut colt by Love Wisely Monday and belongs to J. B. Joel. Eastern is a. brown colt by Eager Galicia and is owned by Mr. Fairie. Orby ms ridden tttday by W. Bullock, Mr. Crokers regular stable jockey, hut Johnny Ueiff, who rode him to his Derby victory will pilot him in the race for the St. Leger.
