" YEIL REGAINS HER SPEED SETS A NEW TRACK RECORD IN THE FOURTH OAKLAND RACE. Lazell Wins at Long Odds Cello in Good Form Betting Declared Off on -Last Race. Oakland, Cal., November 13. The stewards at Oakland made ."a sensational ruling by declariug bets off after the last race had been decided on the local track today. Starter Richard Dwyer overlooked the laggard 12 to 1 shot, Al .Lindley, and sent the others away without him. .Dwycrs assistant had been sent after the Bute gelding in order to accelerate his arrival at the post. For years the starting of the last race has been marked by undue haste and resultant fiascos. The winner, Prejuicio, backed into hot favoritism, was owned, unfortunately for his backers, by President Thomas H. Williams. It was probably as .much in deference to his wishes as to a precedent established by Judge Hopper himself once upon a time at Latonia, that caused the stewards to adopt a policy that was fair and in the main satisfactory to everyone concerned. The decision was greeted with tremendous enthusiasm. The Santa Cruz Handicap at a mile and twenty yards was the conspicuous feature of the excellent card of six races. A field of seven horses o superior class faced the starter. James R. Keenes cast-off Veil, backed down from as high as 3 to 1 to 2 to 1 at the close, won a fast-run race under the skillful handling of the improving lightweight jockey, Merritt Buxton. The performance was of surpassing merit, the track record being lowered by three-eighths ot a second, and the worlds mark of 1:40, held jointly by Maid Marian, Macy and Six Shooter approached within two-fifths of a second. Jockeys R. Davis and Scovilla were set down for three days and fined 25 respectively for misbehavior at the post in the first race. Ideal weather .for racing still obtains and the big inclosure was tilled to overllowing today.
