! J SIR EDWARD WINS IN EXCITING FINISH. Shilling Out-Generals Burns by Unexpected Rush — Jane Swift and Canique Successful Favorites. Los AageleS, Cal.. January 20. — The free handicap today was productive of a sensational finish in which Sir Edward, overlooked in the letting, won in the last few strides of a great stretch run next to the rail. ,. Burns, on Magazine, was looking t" the right of him and did not see Sir Kdward slip through iii the final hundred yards. The eighteen books did a big days business, quitting about even. M. Ilancy. a well-known eastern horseman, arrived today and will remain for the rest of the season. Jane Swift won the first race after setting a fast pace. Valley Stream, a castoff from the August Belmont stable, which was making her second start on the roast, was carried wide by the winner when cut. ring the stretch and ihrough this probably lost second place. Dally, which closed up fast next to the inside rail, getting up to take second money by the narrowest of margins. May Dieudonne, from the Carman stable, and ridden by G. Burns, was made a pronounced favorite in the baby race, but was beaten in a neck and neck finish by Thunder Hill. The favorite was probahly best and was practically left liat-footed at the start and experienced a rough journey. Calera and Annie Wells showed good early speed, the former tiring badly near the end. while the latter hung on to finish an easy third. Another public favorite went down to defeat iu tin- running of the third race. Mary F. was easily best and finished cantering. Kscalante finished resolutely, but was no match for the winner today.
