OUTSIDERS MONOPOLIZE FIRST PLACES OVER HEAVY TRACK AT OAKLAND. • Burleigh Wins the Main Feature in a Close Finish with Cigarlighter and Sewell Breaks Down — Ancient Tancred Takes a Race. • Oakland, Cal.. March 2. — Outsiders mono|iolized the racing honors at Oakland today. The liest of weather prevailed, but the track was muddy. I.oiig-odds surprises were furnished by Handmaiden. Alice Collins and Tancred. The victory of the Schreiber filly can be safely attributed to the start, which in nin •teen or.t of every twenty juvenile races run at Oakland tuis season has been the deciding factor. The car«l was good, but lacked stake features. The fourt.i race was the overshadowing feature on the program, the horses engaged including Sewell and -Bin leifh. The first named closed a heavily hacked favorite at odds-oil. but ran unplaied in a very bad performance. Burleigh led all the way. but it took all ei Walter Miller*, skill and vigor to land him in front of Cigarlight -r. Sewell, which has not raced since his sensational victory in the Crocker Stakes last December, had licen given a slow and car.ful preparation, but his underpinnings were weak and uncertain and todays severe test resulted in what appeared to be a complete breakdown for this phenomenally fast sou of Cesarion. A big Monday crowd witnessed todays good racing and forty layers satisfi d their demands in a speculative way. The champion two-year-old. Lee Rose, has been shipped up for the Undine Stakes next Saturday. Graphite split his right fore foot in the Waterliouse Cup and may lie retired permanently. T. II. Ryan has just sold his Hanover stallion. Reminder, to Captain Hackett, of the Anchorage Stock Farm, of this state and the ten-year-old full brother to Handball will be shipped here immediately from Ryans place in Illinois. W. Walker left for Santa Anita this morning with Stanley Fay, Centre Shot, Monaco Maid and Klla Free. II. 1. Brown has been awarded the contract for building an up-to-date race track* at Salt Lake City. Tile new association has planned to hold a spring and fall meeting of four weeks duration. A. G. Rlakeley has closed up his business here and will leave for the east via Los Angeles tomorrow night. Brbert and Blue Heron were not sold and will be raced in the east next season. W. S. Knapp, father of jockey W. Knapp. acquired the nucleus of a racing stable on Saturday in Cheers and Vronsky. Vincent Smith, known as "Nickey," one of Dwy-ers assistants, was arrested for alleged abuse of the "bull whip" on racers in his charge at the post by an officer of the Humane Society at the close of racing Saturday, but was quickly released oa hail furnished by secretary P. W. Treat of the California Jockey Club.
