SPLENDID WASHINGTON MEETING CLOSES Big Crowd Takes Advantage of tho Last Day Taboo Wins tho Jesse Brown Cup Washington D C April 14vThe first session of racing of the year under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club closed here this afternoon with the running of the sixth race The scene shifts tomor ¬ row to the Queens County course at Aqueduct The spring meeting of the Washington Jockey Club this year was attended with a larger measure of success than in any previous year The weather was for the most part favorable for good racing and no untoward incidents occurred luring the score of days the thoroughbred held sway swayThe The program of the last day had but one promi ¬ nent feature which was the fesse Brown Cup for twoyearold bred in Virginia Maryland or the District of Columbia ColumbiaJinny Jinny of Washingtons racing enthusiasts availed themselves of the last opportunity to see racing at the local track until after the close of the metro ¬ politan season The day was warm and springlike which with a fast track made the sjmrt interesting and the outing most enjoyable Five of the six horses returned the winners today went to the poft as the public choices and from a speculative stand ¬ point the day was one of the most profitable for the visitors of the meeting The only favorite to meet defeat was Smoker which was regarded as the most probable winner of Ihe handicap carded as the fifth race Ills defeat came about partly through his swerving to the outside shortly after the start carrying Ioqnessing and Heidmoore two of the other three starters with him allowing Howard Sliean to retain the inside position Mc Cahey on Howard Shean was quick to see the advan tage and made the most of It by leading throughout with Smoker in nearest pursuit Smoker tired near the end and Poqiiessiug outstayed him for second place in a game finish finishThe The first race went to Witching Hour the best of the trio which John K Madden sent to the post The race resulted in a stirring finish between the winner Claiborne and Black Mose which were but heads apart in the order named as they passed the judges judgesThe The second race was also hotly contested The talent was early aware of the probable eon tenders and Simple Honours and Servile were at all times equal choices The Chelsea Stable furnished the winner in Simple Honours which rushed into the lead right after the start and maintained it to the end but was forced to do his utmost In the closing strides to withstand the determined chal ¬ lenge of Servile Oracnlum attempted to keep pace with the winner but tired in the stretch and Hob Callahan Jr easily passed him and took third place placeGeneral General W T Townes bay filly Taboo stamped herself as the best of her sex shovn under colors during the meeting by taking the Jesse Brown Cup in Impressive fashion She ran under restraint to the last sixteenth where she passed the leaders when called on and won going away Hawkwing and Al Busch set the early pace of which the Din ¬ ner Stakes winner was best finishing two lengths in front of the latter latterThe The condensed history of the Jesse Brown Cup is as follows Year Winner Wt Jockey Val Time Timel0n Timel0n l0n Pater 110 Baird 050 f r0 r01K 0s 0s1K0 1K 1K0 Orphan Lad 112 W Miller 1320 rliOJ 1107 Billie Ilibbs 112 W Miller 1120 40J190S 4J 190S Taboo 112 McFadden 1020 iLi iLiThe The white jacket with green sleeves of the AftWi green Stable finished in front for the second time when Aiken won the steeplechase handicap from Banner and Yama Christy Essex II made the running badlyJockey for the first two miles and then quit badly Jockey Fairbrother rode his second winner with Lady Karma in the last race raceOwners Owners trainers jockeys and the Now Yorkers who have been here for the meeting are on their mettle this evening in making final preparations for departure on the night trains which will carry them to New York where the racing season opens in ear ¬ nest with the running of the Carter Handicap
