JACK ATKIFS GRAND RACE TAKES THE CARTER HANDICAP WITH RED KIVER SECOND CHAPULTEPEC THIRD Aqueduct Meeting Opens with an Enormous Attend ¬ ance Despite Unfavorable Weather and Track Conditions One Race for Kccnc New York April 15 Twentyfive thousand race ¬ goers started early in the day to journey through the cold rain to the Aqueduct nice track for the purpose of watching the fourteenth running of the Carter Handicap which since its cstahlislunent has opened the eastern racing season Many of the thousands reached the track hours before the gates were opened and waited patiently in the rain for the privilege of paying an admission fee It was the largest crowd ever seen at Aqueduct on an opening day dayNotwithstanding Notwithstanding the heavy rain which commenced to fall early in the morning and continued through ¬ out the afternoon and the many rumors of militia in ¬ terference the New Yorkers who had their appetite for the sport whetted and appreciation of the sport enhanced by the attacks made on it could not forego an opportunity to he in the grandstand when the horses went to the post for the first race raceThe The rcplrictions at the gate regarding those ap ¬ plying for admission wre many and the effects of the new rules in force for the first time were noticeable in the character of the big cnowd in the grandstand The 250 bookmakers on hand to care for the business of the spcculatively inclined were not provided with stools as in previous years and the management supervised the betting to the extent that no wager of less than 2 was accepted l y any of the layers and the plunging proclivities t f the crowd was limited by a rule forbidding the placing of less than 3 in the big ring The back line was abolished and in consequence the business done by the layers was very light compared to the amount handled in previous years on like occasions occasionsThe The heavy track had no effect on the attractive ¬ ness of the days sport as many horses of well known mudrunning qualities were among those carded to start in the overnight entries and the same was equally true of the Carter Handicap which completely overshadowed the other races The exjockey trainer and owner George M Odoin started the season by saddling the winner of the first race which was Pantoutle a recent arrivil from the Washington meeting Berry Maid was the favorite but the wise set would have none of her and she was supported solely by the public which had selected L A Cellas Hyperion II as tile probable winner only to find that Hyperion II had been withdrawn and then turned to Berry Maid as their chief reliance relianceTlfe Tlfe second running of the Bayside Steeplechase over the Jwomile course was second on the program and Jimmy Lane and Percentage were the choices with the latter ruling as the favorite at all times Percentage proved much the best at the weights nnd led all the way winning eased up near the end Jimmy Lane which won the race last year was in nearest pursuit of the winner throughout but was unable to threaten the Colt horse at any stage of the race Gold Circle refused to take the second jump and did not finish the course courseThe The condensed rushed too much by McDanicl in the early running in an attempt to overtake the leaders but it was a hopeless pursuit although Chapultepec finished a game third Moelick appeared in line condition but raced as though over ¬ weighted and failed utterly after showing a brief display of speed Angelus was off poorly which destroyed whatever chances he had to win but did not look fit for a gruelling
