NO MORE BETTING IN DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA Washington D C April 15 Without discussion dissent or division the senate today passed the bill prohibiting betting in the District of Columbia The bill was called tip by Senator Carter and after being read was immediately put on its passage passageThe The antibetting provision is a rider offered by Representative Sims on a bill providing for the widening of Benning Road the principal thorough ¬ fare leading to the race course in the suburb of Benning Tho bill originated in the house and has passed that body but it will be necessary to send it back as the form of the betting section was changed by the senate If the house does not accept the change it will be necessary to place the bill In the hands of a conference committee for the adjustment of differences In phraseology As It passed the senate the gambling provision reads readsIt It shall be unlawful for any person or associ ¬ ation of persons to bet gamble or make books or pools on the result of any trotting or running race of horses or boat race or race of any kind or on any election or any contest of any kind or game of baseball Any person or association of persons violating the provisions of this section shall be fined not exceeding 5 or l e imprisoned not more than ninety days or both
