ANCIENT HISTORY OF CHESTER CUP In 1810 Gen Grosvenor gave a cup valued at seventy sovereigns and joined Sir T G Egerton in another worth sixty sovereigns The city contrib ¬ uted too and to give more extension still to that wise policy a stake was devised in 1824 to stand in the name of tlie tradesmen of Chesfer who con ¬ tributed 100 guineas There were later on pro ¬ posals to add some cheese to the bounty and if the good traders of Chester had had their way the winner of the cup might have carried off 1 ton of that delicious commodity Tlie Daily Telegraph
