WILLIAMS RISES TO THE SITUATION Contemplates Increasing California Stake Offerings to Almost the New York Standard New York June 2 Now that thoroughbred rac ¬ ing has been or is in imminent danger of being put out of existence in the state of Louisiana and with it the passing of winter racing at New Or ¬ leans many thousands of eastern racegoers are looking forward to California as the coming racing Mecca of the United States during the winter months From an authoritative source comes the information that President Thomas H Williams of the New California Jockey Club will meet the emer ¬ gency in a way that will astonish the racing world by establishing an array of stakes that for number and value will surpass the stake offerings of any winter racing association In America It is stated that In order to attract the best class of eastern horses Mr Williams will increase the Burns Han ¬ dicap Californias richest stake from 10000 to 20000 and possibly create two new stakes of 10000 each with twenty others ranging in value from 3000 down to 2500 added The past sea ¬ sons bijg disbursement in stakes and purses will be increased to nearly a million dollars for the coming
