OORRIGAN YOUNGSTERS FOR SOUTH AMERICA McLean Bought for the Lima Jockey Club and Gray for Argentina New York July 3 At the recent FasigTipton yearling sales at Sheepshead Bay A A McLean Has been a frequent bidder McLean was not known to the horsemen but he was buying the youngsters for the Lima Jockey Club M A Sil ¬ vers some years ago an American jockey held a commission from the Lima Jockey Club and he was the buyer though McLean did the bidding biddingIn In ail there were nineteen yearlings purchased to be shipped to Peru and for the lot he only ex ¬ pended 2225 making the average for the young thoroughbred just a trille over 117 each The highest price paid was 300 for a bay filly by Blues and out of Sister Tenny and a like price for a bay filly by Lissak out of Justicia A bay or brown colt by Algol out of Syd Ayres was secured for 200 and the others were bought for prices that ranged from 150 down to 50 each eachSouth South America has long been a good market for the thoroughbreds but it has been the Argentine Republic that has been the real home of the horse in the southern continent It Is here that the princely prices have been paid for famous English and French sires until now the native strain has become of a quality that there is less need of seek ¬ ing foreign markets The action of the Lima Jockey Club In sending a representative to New York to make purchases opens up a new market for the thoroughbred and one that is sure to be of vast Importance to the breeders breedersThe The yearlings purchased by Mr Silvers will be ¬ gin the long journey to Peru Friday They were purchased with a view of improving the strain of horses in the far southern country and on their ar ¬ rival the Lima Jockey Club will offer them at auc ¬ tion The purchases were in no sense speculative but jnst n desire on the part of the club to bring the Americanbred horses within the reach of the sportsmen who desire to better their racing estab ¬ lishments and at the same time secure a nucleus for breeding farms farmsAt At the sale of the Edward Corrigan yearlings Wednesday Mr Silvers completed his southern con ¬ signment when he took six out of the sales ring After the salo he said that he was more than pleased with the success of his mission and said that the Lima Jockey Club would probably be a fre ¬ quent bidder in future sales He expressed some surprise at being able to secure such bargains and told of buying a colt out of Doughnuts for 100 for which he has since refused twice that amount amountAnother Another South American visitor was at the sales ring yesterday In the person of Charles Grty It is not so long ago that Gray was a jockey of promi ¬ nence In the west under contract to T W Coulter Gray bought three yearlings at the sale and they will be shipped with the Lima Jockey Club consign ¬ ment Friday FridayGray Gray has been in the Argentine Republic for some seasons He is training a stable of horses there and spoke enthusiastically of the sport His visit to New York is just a part of a vacation and before he returns he will visit his home in the west There was a bit of sentiment in one of Grays pur ¬ chases A goodlooking bay colt was led into the ring and his pedigree was announced as by McGee out of Midlight Gray had ridden Midlight in sev ¬ eral of her races and while he really did not intend to buy the colt just for the sake of the mare he made the purchase purchaseThe The best price realized at the Corrigan sale was S1025 paid for a chestnut filly by McGee out of California by the way another mare that Gray rode in some races This filly went to the Oneck stable after Tully Coulter had gone to 1000 in an effort to secure her Coulter had raced California and that was his reason for trying to lead the lilly out of the ring
