PERSONAL JLIBERTY LEAGUE STILL GROWS One Branch in Brooklyn with Ten Thousand Mem ¬ bers Sentiment in Its Favor New York July 17 Ten thousand members of the Personal Rights Protective League enrolled in I one branch conveys the Impression that this move ¬ ment is to play no small part in the coming elec ¬ tion this fall fallIt It was at the meeting of the Personal Rights Protective League of America held Tuesday at the offices of Vennette F Pelletreau Co ISO Remsen street Brooklyn that this enrollment of ten thous ¬ and new members was reported together with the announcement by the secretary that applications were being made at the rate of five hundred a day dayAt At this meeting the following officers were ap ¬ pointed for the year Lawton B Garsldc attorney and counselor at law president A Rogers Lee of V F Pelletreau Co vicepresident George A Hann secretary and Theophlhis Gilman of the Atlantic Pacific Tea Company treasurer Direct ¬ ors Brown Hunter and Lee were appointed a com ¬ mittee to superintend the distribution of buttons buttonsEverywhere Everywhere the same enthusiasm over the cause of personal liberty is beiug developed among the men of New York who are growing restive under the restraints and restrictions of narrowminded oppressive legislation It is known that at this time the Personal Rights League can muster fifty thousand men and before election day will l e able to control votes enough to make the personal liberty issue the strongest of the campaign campaignThe The work of preparing for a stirring campaign is going steadily on In lack of other issues in what promises to be a colorless campaign the per ¬ sonal liberty issue in New York will be a vivid re ¬ lief liefThe The character of the men who are daily sending in applications for membership is of itself a guar ¬ antee of the character of the league New York hag become fully aroused to the necessity of pro ¬ tecting the city against continued legislation pre ¬ judicial to its best interests and thousands who rarely take an interest in politics are becoming en ¬ thusiastic over the promising development of the sentiment In favor of a greater and broader spirit of personal liberty In this town townThe The merchants are becoming especially Interested and are daily giving evidence of their interest in their letters to the recretary of the league The belief that New York has outgrown the narrow pro ¬ vincialism to which it would be restricted by up ¬ state legislators has developed into an aggressive resentment against the Hughes regime and all it stands for forWhen When Colonel Franklin Bartlett returns from his trip abroad he will find the preliminary work of the organization well under way aud will be ready to take up the active work of the campdign for personal liberty to be fought this fall fallA A poll of tho board of aldermen has shown that with few exceptions that body is almost wholly in sympathy with the movement for a greater measure of personal liberty In New York and will be only too glad to take advantage of this sentiment In framing more liberal ordinances
