SELLING PLATERS DAY AT FORT ERIE V Powers Distinguishes Himself By Riding Five Winners in Six Mounts Buffalo X Y Augnst 0 Jockey Powers good riding was the principal feature of the racing at Fort Krie this afternoon Out of six mounts he landed live winners His followers which number juany in lliese parts reaped a harvest and made considerable inroads on the bankrolls of the book ¬ makers He began his successes with Dr Ilolzberg in the opener and followed in quick succession with Gerrvmander Topsy Robinson and Hnck He failed to get a place witlr Uoyal Onyx in the sixth but made amends by landing Uncle Toby an easy winner in the closing nice He did not have a mount in the third race won by Maycella ridden by Dever ieli ieliAn An ordinary card consisting of seven selling races gave tins poorclass horses a chance to earn purses and their owners took advantage by entering liber ally causing big fields to go to the post in each race Favorites fared well four of them being suc ¬ cessful The only outsider to Win was Minor which bent Lady Carol in the laststride Many disputed the judges placing in this race contending that Lady Carol had won by a good head There Is a sharp angle at the finish which no doubt accounted for the variance in opinion While the layers did not escape a scorching some of the smart bettors also suffered extensively bv the failures of Chief Hayes and Lady Martha Thi latter in tbe closing race was hacked with a confidence that was misplaced She heh out hopes to her backers by trailing Fucle Toby closely for threequarters but when billed on in the stretch made a failure and was eventually headed by Spunky for second place placeThe The showing of Chief Hayes in Hie sixth race vr a distinct form reversal over his previous efforts here He was ridden by the diminutive V Brrn uon and was at no time a serious factor in the running The judges had the rider np for an ex ¬ planation and they will probably investigate further into the horses poor showing today todayBarney Barney Schreiber managed to win his first purs of the meeting when Dr Ilolzberg won the opening race after bard drive to outstay Anemonella Gerrymander was much the best In the second and easily disposed of his opposition in the stretch Maycella was lucky to win in the third race as with a stronger rider on Marmorean the latter would have won Topsy Robinson was backed to the exclusion of everything in the fourth race and made good in handy style iKeep Moving again disappointed by failing to land better than third Miss Catesby at a long price taking second place placeThe The judges suspended jockey Kennedy for four racirig ilays for his rough riding while astride Lex ington Lady in the fourth race Jockeys T Taylo r and F Burton were eath suspended for four days by the starter for disobedience at the post For a similar offense jockey Goedike was also sus ¬ pended for ten days by the starter Gllvedear bad to be excused from starting in the closing race on account of sickness ithat developed during the afternoon His temperature after the last race was high and fears are entertained that he may not recover Hart Dernham who is at present at Jamestown sent word here today that a thirtyday meeting would be inaugurated at the Jamestown Ara track beginning September 10 Last year a meeting was held there in connection with tile exposition but a scarcity of horses and ridqrs made it a failure Hart Dernham will be the racing secretary and will shortly issue the condition book bookAs As a result of the poor riding form displayed re ¬ cently by Guy Burns K F Carman his contract employer has decided to give him a rest and will send him to Montreal where a dozen or more of the Oarman horses are at present being prepared to be raced
