IMPROVING AT FORT ERIE DRYINGOUT TRACK AND GOOD HORSES IN ACTION INCREASE ATTENDANCE Dennis Stafford Victor in the Sprint Terah Defeats Goes Fast and Cave Adsum Five Favdrites Fail Buffalo X Y August 10 There was a decided improvement In the attendance and racing at Fort Erie today fine weather and a wellarranged card in which some good horses met being chiefly Tre sponsible for the improvement The track while still drying out from the severe drenching It wa subjected to had linn footing and in one Instance fast time was recorded recordedFavorites Favorites were again downed tfive of the seven failing their hackers The steeplechase over the short course was a hardfought race and resulted in a victory for the wellridden Woodslde McClain his Vidor allowed him to trail during the early running and timing his challenge carefully wore Awawegang and Economy down when Hearing the last ihedge and won going away Awawegang a new beginner at jumping ishoweU much the most speed for the first itiirn of the course and by his fast pare caused Lights Out to fall at the seventh jump He was also instrumental in causing McAl ¬ listers defeat The latter attempted to keep pace with him over the first six hedges but found the task too ditlicult and tired badly when called on Awawegang will after a few more lessons be a formidable opponent to the crosscountry racers in these parts The six furlongs sprint in which some good short distance racers met went to Dennis Stafford which Nugent Bros recently purchased from Burlew ONeill He was much the btrst in the race and proved it by running out on the stretch turn and coming on to a victory over Superstition Just as the barrier was released Melange riildea by S Flyrin stumbled and unseated the rider and then fell over him Flynu was badly injured about the face The rider had recently been suspended by the judges from riding here on account of bis timidity but the officials had modified their ruling and allowed him to accept mounts from his contract employer Myron McIIenry The Corrigan stable furnished the first three beaten favorites Aline McGee which has been showing good form in recent starts was an overwhelming Tavorite for the opener and she was downed handily by L A Cellas Arionette and Gladys Louise Mc ¬ Allister in the jumping race was never formidable In the third race another twoyearold dash Ellza betli Hanvood was well supported but again the Corrigan followers were disappointed as L A Cellas Irrigator came away to an easy victory Coalcutter taking second place In the final strides from Elizabeth Harwood HarwoodThe The closing race went to Terah Goes Fast beat ¬ ing Cave Adsum the favorite for second place T C McDowell added another imrsei when his Mirth won the sixth race in handy style after leading all the way The wayThe horses raced here by T F Coles W Jen ¬ nings and W II Mosby will be shipped tomorrow to Montreal to be rested until the Blue Bonnets meeting opens K opensK I Miller M Burtianan M C Ricketts T Johnston and J Farrell Jr will send their horses to Baltimore tomorrow for the United Hunts Club meeting that begius at Pimlico next week On account of most of his horses being disqualified for having raced at Jamestown last season H Flippen will have to forego shipping to Montreal and Toronto He will campaign Woodside Bellthe Cat and others in his string at the fairs in Virginia at Roanoke Richmond and Lynehbnrg Judge LynehbnrgJudge Joseph A Murphy has been tendered the position of presiding judge ae tne coming James ¬ town and San Antonio meetings He declined to serve He will make an effort to be on hand at the Austin Texas meeting
