NEW MICHIGAN RACE TRACK CONSTRUCTION OF COURSE AT NEW BUFFALO BEGAN YESTERDAY Two Chicago Railroads To Make Trip in Seventy Five Minutes Racing To Begin October 1 Plans and Details Chlcagoans who enjoy racing will have 1 chance to do so villiin a month on a new race course near New Buffalo M irh Work liesail on the construction yesterday morning ami he management promises to begin a meeting of thirtylive or forty days October The new track is to he operated hy what is known us the Michigan Breeders Association with K T Camp of Union Pier Mich as president and Sheridan Clark secretary and manager Mr Camp lives at Union Tier Mich is a real estate dealer and owns large interests in Ierrien county Sheri ¬ dan Dark was secretary oC the Crescent City Jockey Club of New Orleans for ten or twelve years lie fore the Olla interests got in there lie was sec ¬ retary of the Chicago Racing Association at Haw ¬ thorne in 1JMI2 and 1903 and had charge of the erection of the Jamestown Va plant and racing last year yearThe The new association has 225 acres of land one mile west of the village of New Buffalo in the southwest corner of Bcrrien county and just over the Indiana line It is not in any township The tract of land is bounded on two sides by the tracks of the Iere Maniuette and Michigan Central roads ind is exactly sixtytwo miles from Chicago Ar ¬ rangements have already been made for both the 1ere Marquette and Michigan Central roads to run trains from their depots in Chicago to the race track gates in seventylive minutes and for a round trip fare of 1 or less There are no shipping piers at New Buffalo though the track can be reached from Michigan City by a onemile trolley ride New Itnffalo is u pretty little agricultural village with a population of 400 and three saloons A good many workmen are busy on the site today and the construction contracts have been closed Tlu wound lias already been surveyed and the con W ruction planscall or an oval track of one and heeighth miles a reproduction almost of the Saratoga course with chutes that will furnish seven furlongs and one mile courses with but one turn The track will easily drain as the bed will be of sand and clay with a heavy top dressing of loam The lirst grandstand to be hastily con ¬ structed will be patterned after that at Harlem si straight structure with the front nearly all stairs It will accommodate 2500 people Stabling for GOO horses will be furnished before the plant is opened ind Clark expects them to be crowded early and that many of the best animals in the east will occupy them themThe The meeting will open October 1 said Mr Camp yesterday There will be six races daily beginning at p m no purse will be less than S4IM and the average daily offerings will he 2701 There will be an open l etting ring All reputable bookmaker can operate in it and the slates and liiuiths will be used There will be no interference Nvlth a Michigan project run by Michigan folks for the beneit of Michigan No horse or track owner vill control any of the stock It will be all held l y Michigan people The racing officials have not as yet been chosen They will be men that will in tm public conlidence in full
