SEATTLE MEETING A GREAT SUCCESS SUCCESSSeattle Seattle Wash September 7 The seventythree days summer meeting of the King County Fair Association which comes to a eloso at the Mead ¬ ows next Saturday was byjill odds the most success ¬ ful in the history of racing hereabouts Only from the standpoint of form was it disappointing When the meeting opened the expectation prevailed that iu view of the fair class of horses engaged form would be lossly observed This expectation was not realized however The percentage of winning favorites has been extremely low and form followers have had disastrous experiences Exasperating ie versals have been painfully frequent despite the most vigilant efforts of the otlicials and many of them have been of an unaccountable character In the endeavor to keep the sport clean the judges suspended a greater number of jockeys than had probably ever before been disciplined in that manner at a meeting of enual duration and most of them are still on the ground and likely to remain there for some time to come Some of the bookmakers that operated throughout the meeting won fairly well few of them lost to any considerable extent but none of them rolled up the enormous protits that might be looked for in view of the failure of the horses to run to form Roy Ollutt figures as the biggest loser among the layers He quit early in the meeting with a balance of 2000 on the wrong side of the sheet and has failed to recoup any material part of his losses in his operations from the ground Hughey Jones George Lendon W G Yanke and Johnny Lewis are among the principal winners Jones won about 12000 booking and 000 more betting while the others named are each about 10000 winner winnerThat That tinre will be racing here again next season is the belief of those well versed in local politics Early in the season there was considerable agitation against the sport but it has apparently died out and those in close touch with the situation enter ¬ tain the idea that there will lie no antiracing legislation in this state the coming winter The fact that the whole state is interested in the suc ¬ cess of the AlaskaYukouPacilic exposition next summer will undoubtedly have a bearing on the fate of any legislation that may be attempted it being understood that the promoters of the exposi ¬ tion are inclined to the opinion that the racing will help to attract visitors visitorsOf Of the lightweight jockeys developed during the meeting Page Russell Coburn and King are the likeliest to keep on making good Wilson is a fair prospect but hardly as good as the others Slug ¬ gishness at the barrier is his chief fault Russell who is under contract to William Caine Is not ouly alert at the post but has a very nice seat and hands and is a right good linisher for such a little chap Ho can ride at eightytwo pounds and to his pro ¬ ficiency in the saddle is largely due the financial success which his employer has had during the meet ¬ ing Caine appears to have a faculty for making riders Benny McClain the sensation of last sea ¬ son here having been developed by him Russell will ride during the winter at Oakland Page who is under contract to Early Wright will go to Santa Anita with his employer for the winter He weighs about ninety pounds and is a cool calculating rider and a powerful finisher but inclined to be a bit slow in getting away from the post He ap ¬ pears to be an especially capable rider over a dis ¬ tance of ground Coburn and King have come into the limelight only recently The former is a brother of Monk Coburn a good rider iu his day He is under contract to V H Terry trainer for Steele Riley and gives promise of becoming a very useful rider He does about ninety pounds and handles a horse well for a boy of his limited ex ¬ perience King is the latest boy to show promising form He is the protege of J Doyle trainer for Dr T S Guilds He has been making the most of his limited opportunities and with Coburn he un ¬ doubtedly will give a good account of himself at Oakland the coming1 winter winterIrving Irving H Wheatcroft the English capitalist whose horses have raced here with signal success under the sobriquet of the St James Stable in charge of trainer Lew Marion is planning to establish him ¬ self as a breeder on an ambitious scale at his ex ¬ tensive country estate on St James Island near oughbreds of good class to reinforce his racing string which will be campaigned at Santa Anita Park the coming winter In making purchases of racing stock Wheatcroft will confine himself to mares and
