ACCIDENT DECIDES BIG AUSTRALIAN RACE RACETlie Tlie Australian Hurdle Knee one of the chief jumping races of the Australian turf and formerly called the Caultield Grand National was decided August 1 on the first day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Clubs meeting with peculiar running and a surprising termination The New Zealanders had sent over a candidate named Ataahua and only failed to bring off a grand coup with him through a singular accident The race is at three and a half miles but Ataahua went out as if in a sprint ¬ ing race and went so fast that he soon had the others hopelessly strung out and kept them so Seven furlongs from home Dagoba left the others and taking after him got to within seven lengths at one time But Ataahua let out another link and drawing away again was leading by twenty lengths with the race safely won when to the consternation of his jubilant backers he took off too far at the next to the last jump and lost his rider through the resultant blunder in landing This gave Dagoba the race in a twinkling
