PARIMUTUEL PRICE MANIPULATION MANIPULATIONMechanical Mechanical Dotting Easily Falsified Unless Volume of Play Is Large The following remarkable statement is sent out in i dispatch from Lexington and printed in the Chicago RecordHerald RecordHeraldMany Many handbooks settle on the basis of prices issued In a siportiiig card As no odds are laid at the track it can be seen that such prices are purely fiction A heavily played horse one on which the handbooks would lose is always held at an ab ¬ surdly short price An unplayed horse may be an ¬ nounced as running at the magnificent odds of S or 10 to 1 Rut the percentage in favor of handbooks is so enormous and is so flagrantly handled that a feeling of hostility Is manifest everywhere against the sport sportOf Of course tho facts are not in accord with this statement as odda are laid at the Lexington track the actual odds of play under the mechanical pari mutnel System These however are not truthful at Lexington because the volume of play there is so small that It Is possible as in the case of Ryan et al last Thursday to manipulate them for outside transactions of greater volume The parimutuel Kystem cannot be used for truth of result at such a meeting as that now in operation at Lexington Its value and truth on the French courses about Paris is on account of the monstrous sale of tickets over each race the average takings of the machines being some 80000 per race To manipulate price with such n volume of play would be almost Im ¬ possible and certainly would too a losing transac action As it was on Tuesday Ryan and his agents by the expenditure of a few hundred dollars oit the field against Miss Sain caused the machine to show odds of some Gi to against the filly Hail bookmaking odds toeen made on the race her price would not have been better than 3 to 5 and about 1 to 2 would probably have been the average odds Ky this trick Ryan was able to toet some 10000 in other places where prices were laid and to win some 13000 at miituel quotations for the bet which under regular conditions would have yielded him 5000 or 0000 at most It is no wonder that the mutucls are unpopular They are not true as operated at Lexington and Ryans trick is likely to be repeated
