LEADING WINNING TWOYEAROLDS TwentyEight Have Won 5000 or More with Sir Martin and Maskette the Leaders While the elimination of some big stakes has served to reduce the earning possibilities of the well engaged twoyearolds of 1908 there has still been n plentiful aggregate of money to be contended for and twentyeight have won 5000 or more As all conversant with the affairs of the tnrf know John E Mad dens good colt Sir Martin Is the leader of the year iml in the course of American racing only His High ¬ ness Domino and Colin won more money as twoyearolds than he now has to his credit Ills perform ¬ ances have been reviewed in Daily Racing Form several times and need no further comment here He is a grand young horse and his next start is to be made in England in 1900 not necessarily in the Epsom Derby although that is the great prize he is particularly to be sent after Tames afterTames H Kecnes Futurity heroine Maskette is safely second in the list She cannot overtake Sir Martin nor can any other twoyearold threaten her total She has only started In live races tliis year but thev were with one exception ail races that counted 1eavily Her total of 50 0 was amassed In winning the Spinaway Stakes and a purse at Saratoga the Futurity and Great Filly Stakes at Sheepshead Kay and running second to Sir Martin in the Flatbush Stakes She is a grand tilly of noble size and pro ixntions If New York racing survives the trials that now beset it slie may do great things over the metropolitan tracks next year She can also go to England and run in the Oaks of next year If Mr ICeene elects to send her over She is a probable starter in the fillies half of the Matron Stakes at the Relinont Pane meeting meetingThird Third In the list comes John E Maddens other star Fiiyette but the total of his winnings is far below Sir Martins and Maskettes Like Sir Martin he is destined for an English campaign next year and is in all resneets a worthy assistant to his mure fortunate stahleiuate Fayette won tho Tremont Stakes at Gravesend June 13 and he first half of the Double Event at Sheepshead Kay June 19 In both Sir Martin ran second to him What more he won in money was in the reverse process of running second to Sir Martin in other important events To this day it is not at all dillicnlt to get into an argu ¬ ment on any New York track as to which is the better colt of the two but the general average of their running points unmistakably to Sir Martin MartinIollowing Iollowing the foregoing illustrious trio art twentylive other twoyearolds not one of which is un worthv of shelter in any stable In the laud Tranie is fourth in the winning list and a cracking good tilly but In the twoyearold racing In California lust spring she was not in the same street with Rose Queen and between the latter and Lee Kose it was a close call Trance will go back to California pres tntly and it will be of interest to note whether this pair still hold her safe or noti There is in this group of twentylive a select snlMlivlsioii but little below tir Martin and Maskette in racing merit they being Melisande Helmet Mediant Field Mouse Suffragette and Fitz Herbert all swift and weightcarrying voungsters of high class Edward is another that may not have shown the l est that he is capable of and Dick Holler just before he unluckily fell sick had legnn to show some of the same measure of excessive speed that brought fame to his sire Dick Welles It is bound to add much to the brilliancy of California racing next winter that a large contingent of this select band is destined to take part in it Uose Qneen and Lee Kose are there now and Trance Suffragette Lawton Wiggins Fitz Herbert Torbellino and Har rigfn at least will be taken there thereTo To date the records
