DOUGLAS PARKS GOOD DAY FALL MEETING OPENS WITH SATISFACTORY PATRONAGE AND EXCELLENT RACING Darbnight Defeats Pinkola and Other Cracks intho inthoFrank Frank Fehr Handicap A Dead Heat Heatin in the First Race Louisville Ky September 28 Disagreeable weather was partly responsible for causing a de ¬ crease in the expected attendance this afternoon at the inauguration of tin Douglas Park elghteendays fall meeting Enough wen on hand however to make a representative showing Speculation by the mutucl and auction pool system was of fair volume and satisfactory to the management One of the best cards scen in the west for a long time of which the Frank Fehr Handicap at a mile and sef enty yards was the feature produced keen racing and the finishes were of the closest kind The kindThe heavy rain of last night did not materially I affect the track and to a considerable extent the footing remained good and favored horses with deli ¬ cate underpinning Some of the best horses that have met in this section for a long time contested In the handicap and by virtue of his light Impost Darknlght managed to gain a victory over Pinkola with Terah crowding the latter closely for second place The Empire City Handicap winner was prob ¬ ably best but was subjected to interference on the stretch turn which brought about his defeat Dark night was lucky throughout and under good guid ¬ ance was always in the lead with Old Honesty and Lawrence P Daley alternating in second place for the first threequarters During the stretch run the latter pair tired badly allowing Terah which had been a distant trailer to pass them and take third place Polly Prim which had been racing in good style on the Canadian tracks ran poorly and brought up the rear in the field of ten starters The startersThe opening scramble at threequarters was re ¬ duced by withdrawals to three starters Wool San ¬ dals being preferred over Al Muller and Halket The latter after going a naif dropped out of coh tention but Wool Sandals and Al Muller fighting it out stride for stride came to the finish so closely aligned that the judges were unable to separate them and made it a dead heat heatStone Stone Street this years Kentucky Derby win ¬ ner surprised the sharps by beating Severus after a spirited struggle in the second race Lady Baldur which finished third was best but under the timid ride she got from Walsh had scant chance after rounding the first turn where he took her back to last place L A Ccllas consistent twoyearold Arlonettc had little difficulty In disposing of her opposition iu the third race and won as her rjder pleased SorrowfulIrfaneh from Barney Schreibers Sorrowful Irfaneh was the shortest priced winner of the afternoon and tho easiest She held sway through ¬ out and won with speed in reserve The reserveThe closing race was taken by Beau Brummel from Lady Esther and Bonnie Bard The trio were noses apart at the finish and elicited great cheering by their spirited struggle struggleJockeys Jockeys Powers and Nicol arrived today from To ¬ ronto The cold weather served to keep Nlcol out of the saddle He was slated to ride Polly Prlin but had to cancel his engagement in favor of Sklr vin Powers on account of the cold could ride no lighter than 110 pounds poundsMortibov Mortibov bad to be excused from starting in tho last race on account of illness He has a high fever and fears are entertained for his recovery The many improvements made on the Douglas Park plant entitles it to rank as the best track In the west westDr Dr Smirall was sold today by E Alvey toII Harris of Louisville who will race him here
