Tom Shaw, now In California, has asked for eight stalls at Pimlieo for his horses. Shaws presence at the Baltimore meeting will mean some heavy betting transactions, both on and against horses. The horses of W. D. Althouse arrived at Pimlieo Saturday. They came from Philadelphia, where they spent the winter. In the lot are Judge Er-inentrout and Our Maggie and four two-year-olds. They all appeared to have wintered well. Mars Cassidy. on a recent visit to his former home. Washington, told a friend that he had received an intimation from the Jockey Club that his services as starter would hi- required all season and he had better refuse an offer he had received to officiate in Cam da. Jockey Fairhrother had the X-Ray put on his injured leg at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Saturday. He received much encouragement from the doctors, who told him that it was knitting properly and he would probably be able to accept mounts at the Pimlieo meeting. Andy Blakeley has presented Blue Heron and Harry Rogers to Dr. Ogle. They will be campaigned at Victoria. Manager Roliert Leighton is planuing to charter a steamer to take 2."i horses from Santa Anita and Oakland to the coming summer meetings at Victoria and Vancouver. B. C. W. A. Kirwan. Barney Schreibcrs right hand man. is on his way to Sehreibers Missouri farm, where lie will arrange for the selection of a racing stable to hi campaigned over Hie Kentucky tracks. Kirwan will manage this division of the Schreiber stable and W. Whaleiiwill be the trainer. At Maisons Laffitte. near Paris, yesterday, the Prix Marroniers was won by Nash Turners Don Quixote. W. K. Vanderbilts San Pietro and Five oclock also ran. Other American horses that were unplaced in the races were Herman B. Duryeas Rose Noble and Eymet and Mr. Turners Villegi ature and Pillard. John D. Millin has decided to put in the summer at his Rancho del Rio farm, breaking yearlings fyr next seasons racing. There are ten yearlings and fifteen sucklings at the farm. Millin will sell the six two year olds that he has in training if he is able to find purchasers for the youngsters before the close of the Oakland raeiug season. Secretary G. Lore of the English Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in a recent ad dress declared that an Englishwoman recently made a strong protest to the organization against "the horribly cruel practice of scratching horses before a race." She had even noticed, she said, that one poor animal was scratched on the very day of the race. M. J. Hayes stallion. Johnny Lyons, whose premature retirement to the stud was brought aliout by a breakdown in training, is located at the Monterey County breeding farm of C. H. Wiedemann, where he will serye a number of the mares that Wiedemann lecently purchased. Hayes has a suckling colt by Johnny Lyons out of the well-bred mare. Memorize, that is the exact counterpart of his sire.
