BIG RUN-UP AT FORT ERIE. Marchmonet Bid Up from 00 to ,800, out Is Retained by His Owner, Buffalo. N. Y., July 27. The next to last day of tlie summer meeting at Fort Erie was favored ly good weather, which served to draw out another bumper attendance. Speculation was again brisk and resulted in profit for the layers, as most of the winners were little considered outsiders. Big fields faced the starter in most of the races and the running was replete with crowding. The biggest run-up of the meeting enlivened matters and came after the finish of the second race, won by the Texas gelding. Marchmonet. He was entered for 00. T. Abadie raised him to ,S00, but D. B. Freeman protected and led him back to his stable. W. II. Fizers Al Muller put up a sterling performance in taking the handicap from a smart band of sprinters. He led throughout the six furlongs. Hanbridge. despite an exacting impost, was considered best and was made favorite. He ran a good race, but could not wear down the winner. Dr. Waldo Briggs just managed to outstay First Premium for third place. The latter was almost thrown after going a quarter. The fifth race brought together a cheap band and the purse was taken by Fair Messenger, backed from 100 to 1 down to 00. She was away iu front, and her diminutive rider had only to sit still to lead the others for the entire trip. P. T. Chinns Jack Dennerlen furnished the upset in the opener by getting home a short distance ahead of Bob It., the favorite. The steeplechase was easy for Bergoo. which took the lead when his rider elected and beat Class Leader, with Lizzie Flat third. Banuell again came to grief, after showing good speed and fencing ability for the first nine jumps. Iu addition to winning the handicap. W. IT. Fizer took the closing race with Flora Itiiey. She was backed witli rare confidence and showed a much-improved performance over her previous out. Doubt, after leiirg subjected to much interference, managed to beat Beau Brummel for second place. Ragman wan another smartly backed winner to land. He took tlie sixth race after a sharp drive from Elgin. rilhe judges got after some of tlie rough riders this afternoon and fined jockey Held 0 for cutting across sharply with Deseomnets. Jockey Brown was, assessed 5 for the same offense on Fair Messenger. Starter Dade fined steeplechase jockeys Pollock, McKlnney and McClain- 5 each for. disobedience at the post. The Saratoga sliipment from here will include three carloads consigned by Phil T. Chlnn. and the. horses of P. Dunne, J. W. Colt. J. S. Ward. W. J. Young undiA. Baker. There was quite a flurry of excitement when it became known that the judges had ordered jockey Davenport not to accept any mounts for today. The gossip at once coupled the order with the fact of a faulty ride on Zeola. The judges, however, simply wanted to straighten the lads tangled contract. This was done just before the opening race and lie was enabled to accept mounts. He will in future be under contract to J. S. Ward, who is part owner and trainer of the A. Weber string of racers.
