OLD HONESTY IN FINE FORM BREAKS TRACK RECORD IN WINNING THE WINDSOR SELLING STAKES. A. J. Goreys Horse Shows Ability to Stay and Carry Weight Tom Hayward Returns to Winning Form. Detroit, Mich., August 7. A, J. Goreys useful racer. Old Honesty, added another to his long list of victories, incidentally setting at rest doubts as to his weight-carrying ability and staying qualities, when lie won the Windsor Sidling Stakes this afternoon. The race was at a mile and a quarter and the Gorey racer shouldered 110 pounds and conceded weight to all th.? other starters. Despite his exacting impost. Old Honesty clipped four-llfths of a second from the track record of 2:004 for the distance, established only the day before by Howard Shcan. Creel was the overwhelming choice of the big players. but Old Honesty was strongly supported by the half-holldav attendance ami bis victory was greeted with vociferous cheers. Creel and Woolwinder were the early leaders, with Old Honesty in a forward position until the half was reached. Then Davis- gave him- free rein and he flashed into the lead as if the others were standing still. Woolwinder made a bold bid in the stretch but Old Honesty held on gamely and won bv a length. Woolwinder secured second place, a gooil margin before Creel. The latter tired rapidly in tlie lin.il furlong and barely lasted for third plac. Malediction threatening him strongly in the last few strides. The condensed history of the Windsor Selling Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Jockey. .Val. Time. 1000 Rehounder ...4 10:1 W. Fiseher.Sl.KiO l:o4? 1907 Fantastic :: !t:t G. Swain... 1.150 l:4i! 1908 Superstition ..:; S7 Deverich .. 1.150 1:3X4 1909 Old IIoiiesty..n IKS S. Davis . . l.ir.O 2:0.- One and one-sixteenth miles in lOUti and 1907. One mile in 190S. An evenly balanced Held lined up at tlie barrier In the mile dash preceding the stake race. At the skillfully adjusted weights, they presented a dldl cult problem for the speculators, but the bulk of support went to Granla. and she ruled first choice near the end. Tom Hayward. First Premium and .Meadow were also extensively supported. Tom Ha ward, showing a return to his liest form, took a long early lead, which his opponents were never Kbl! to overcome. First l!remium, which had been his nearest pursuer, made several strenuous efforts to displace the winner from the lead, and for a brief period at the stretch turn it looked as though he might be successful, hut the Texas horse faltered a trifle In the closing sixteenth, which allowed Tom Hayward to move away and win by a length. Meadow saved ground entering the stretch and got up in the last stride to heat Vox Iopuli for third. Granla was never a serious contender. and evidently has trained off. Rumors that S. Davis would not do his best on Arionette. favorite in the opening race, brought him a warning from Judge Price. The filly shot into the lead soon after the start and. .leading the others for tlie entire journey, won comfortably from Ragman and Uncle Jiuimic Gray. Casque, the medium of a plunge, finished distantly and was never a serious factor. John C. Ferriss recent acquisition. Delf, furnished the upset in tlie second race, in which she led home a fair band of juveniles, witli 20 to 1 against her chances. Tlie other juvenile race went to Forez. which the Burttschells secured from Pat Dunne before his departure from Fort Erie. The colt was the medium of a plunge and made good In handy fashion. Thirteen platers started in the mile race, and Dredger, favored by the best racing luck, managed to get liqjiie in front of Oriaudot, the favorite. The latter was best, but crowding on. the first turn", from which he was one of the chief sufferers, accounted for his defeat. The tightest finish of the afternoon came in the closing dash. when. Roseboro got up in the last stride after a furious stretch drive to nip out Orphan Lad. with Carew third. The latter was best, but -was taken wide and lost enough ground to cost him tlie race. The Tampa management Is aiming to acquire high-class officials for Its winter meeting, and secured today the contract of A. B. Dade to officiate as starter. Jockey Deverich was suspended for ten davs br tlie starter for disobedience at the post. For similar offenses jockeys Warren and Howard were each given fonr days on the ground. J Writing to friends here from Johannesburg. South Africa, former jockey Tommy Walker states that he is owner of a string of fifteen useful racers, and that the sport in the land of the Boers is in a healthy state. Walker Is still able to accept mounts and does most of the riding for his own stable. Ida -May, which started in the closing race, was claimed for by F. Gering. Sr.
