LEADING AMERICAN OWNERS OF 1909 Notwithstanding the marked falling off in the total distribution by the various racing associations ol the country in stakes and purses as a consequence of the curtailment of racing following the enactment of adverse legislation in several states the number of owners of racing stables whose horses won in excess of 1000 during 1000 was only slightly less than iu 1008 when the effects of the hostile legislation had harJly begun to manifest themselves The 4000 and over class In 1000 was made up of 174 owners as compared with 1SS in 1008 The average winnings of the 4000 class in 100 were much lerfs than those of 1008 however In 1 OS the stables credited with winnings of 4COO and over accounted for 3051801 of the 4351 1 representing the total distribution During tlie year just closed the winners of 40M and over took 1OS7G3 of the 314GG05 distributed This left 11500 2 to be divided among those owners whose horses won less than 4000 as against 1208 O distributed among the same class of less fortunate owners in the preceding year During 1007 which was the hightide y ir of the American turf so far as finances were concerned 204 owners won 5000 and over representing 3735043 of the total distribu ¬ tion of 5375i54 5375i54For For the first time in many years a westerner achieved the honor of heading the list of winning owners S C Hildreth formerly a successful trainer on western tracks is the man to whom tUic distinction of being the chief American owner of 1KK falls Mr HildretU wrested the honor from James R Keene the prowess of whose formidable homebred horses had permitted him to head the list during the preceding lour years Mr Ilildreths horses won 150112 in 1OS while Mr Keenes total for the year was 11173 These two were the only owners whose winnings exceeded the 100000 mark The weakening of the Keene stable by tin shipment to England of most of the stars that had contributed to the ihandsome stihle winnings of the vcar lieforc was a factor in the outcome of the contest for the honors of 1 00 With Ballot Colin and Helmet out of the way King James Fitz Herbert and Joe Madden the trio of cracks that were the principal factors in S C Hildreths success probably had an easier time in winning the important and valuable stakes of the year than otherwise would have been the casw Of course it is possible that Mr Hildreth might still have finished the year in first place yen had there been no division of tilie Keene stable as the horses iu the Hildreth string are admittedly a formidable aggregation of highclass racers During the preceding year Mr Hildreth had won more races than any other owner on the American turf and had finished the year In fourth place The distinction of vnniiing th greatest nunilxir of races in 1000 fell tft Barney Schreiber whose horses were first on 143 occasions The Hildreth record of the pre ¬ ceding year was 110 firsts The Schreiber stable made a similar record in 1007 when it was the leader iu respect to the number of races won with 105 firsts firstsBesides Besides being notable for the displacement of Mr Keene from first place the year brought numerous changes in the makeno of the list of leading owners J K Madden August Belnumt H P Whitncy H F Carman L A Cella and W II Fizer who figured among the ten leaders of 100S were relegated to less important positions in the list of 100 The newcomers among the leading ten are H G Bed well the Montpelier Stable U L Thomas the St James Stable and William Walker Besides S C Hildreth and James H Keene the old leaders that retained their places include Barney Schreiber P T Chinn and andThe The following tabulation shows the leaders in successive years from 1002 to date 1002 Green B Morris 08350 1000 James R Keene 155510 1003 W C
