SPUR LITTLE USED NOWADAYS The galling spur must be added soon to the exten ¬ sive equipment possessed exclusively by writers of turf stories and quite unknown in actual racing The use of th spur practically disappeared some time ago and in checking over the equipment of the rid ¬ ers in some 850 races on the courses of the Canadian Racing Associations last summer it was rarely that spurs had to be recorded The abandonment of spurs is general all over America too Exactly 200 horses ran last Friday at Jacksonville Tampa Juarez and San Francisco and Dally Racing Forms report shows that not one of the sixty starters at Juarez carried them All told spurs were worn by but fourteen riders out of the 200 Their use is almost Invariably for the sole purpose of straightening the horse at tlii post and only in steeplechases are they ever sharp enough to be of service as persuaders Torontp Globe
