TRAINING ACTIVITY IJJ THE EAST EASTNew New York February 21 With the racing reason about New York opening less than eight weeks hence the stables on Long Island arc maning ready and every line morning the horses are sent along smartly in galloping exercises Gravesend as usual is particularly well tilled with horses in training and Jsheoyshead Bay has sheltered a greater number through the winter than ever before The racing at winter tracks bas attracted several owners who In other seasons have been content to rest their horses but plans are being laid to bring some of the winter strings to New iork for i short rest be ¬ fore the arduous training for the long summer cam ¬ paign paignSome Some of the large racing establishments require that the stable jockeys report at the stable March 1 and this will take some of the best riders away from the winter tracks Both Eddie Dugin and J Crcevy who have ridden at Juarez have left for the cast and will soon be galloping horses and becoming acquainted with the lot tSey have to ride during the season Creevy will report to Thomas Hcalev who has the horses of Richard T Wilson Jr at Bcl mont Park and Dugan will either uo to Thomas Welsh at Gravcsend or to John Whaleii who is still at the Belmont farm with his division Butwcll who has IKKII signed to iide for James R Kcche is due to take up his contract with trainer James Rowe immediatelySeveral at Shecphead Bay immediately Several otlnr jockeys that an under contract arc willing on and before the end of nest week boih Sheepshead Bay and Graveycud will shov new life and the trainers will before long IKJ sending their charges seriouslyDuring aloug seriously During the winter there has been something of a change in the methods of trainers In other years it has been the Iwblt of many to keep their charges housed in the cohl months and brinx them nut only for daily exercises When tin weather was un ¬ favorable even this exercise would be bad under the shelter of a roof With few exceptions this winter the horses have boon turned out Ifi paddocks and permitted to rough it The treatment appears to have benefited most of them and horse of everv age have become rough and hardened by a life ii the open air in all weather They have been per ¬ mitted to romp about without a strap and they have not felt the weight of a saddle since being thrown out of training last fall Evidence that the new system is best is furnished by the fact that Dr McCiiIIy recently reported that he did not know of a sick horse at any Long Island track
