NOT A TRULY RUN CONTEST PULKA GAIHS QUESTIONABLE VICTORY IN PONCE HE LE01T HANDICAP Dixie Knight the Favorite Interfered with So Badly Badlyl l y Winner that Jockey Powers Barely Keeps KeepsHis His Saddle Master John a Crackerjack Jacksonville Fla February 2G The Ponce de IXHJII Handicap for threeyearolds at one mile sort of preliminary to Moncreifs Derby was run and won today liy James Hewitts Ogden colt Pulka I ulka was ridden by jockey Deavenport came from behind in the stretch and won going away by three lengths Dixie Knight the favorite with V Powers ip was all but thrown by the winner at the first turn where Deavcnport cut across from the outside and struck Dixie Knight with force enough to all init throw Powers out of the saddle The latter lost one of his stirrup Irons when the mishap occurred and he rode the race with only one foot 5n the stirrups The judges deliberated a bit before con iiruiing the placing Deavcnport was cautioned to e more careful in the future and then Pulkas owner was called uixm to explain the colts reversal which he did in a satisfactory manner The mannerThe going was still deep and heavy and slow time was recorded Only two favorites won the suc ¬ cessful choices being Master John and Spellbound and by a strange coincidence both of these horses are out of the mare Hoodoo the former being by Ornus and the latter by Alhert Master John simply played with his opposition and the race was little more than an exercise gallop for him It looks as if David Dnnlop has nearly a firstclass twoyearold In this colt and trainer John W Panglo has him in splendid condition Master John is re ¬ garded as certain to be heard from at Baltimore this springW spring W C JJaly left for New York by steamer this morning with his mare Killiecrankie which broke down in her last race raceII II McCarren bought the maiden Square Deal at private sale this morning morningOwing Owing to the death of a relative of K L Thomas Hie horses from that stable which Wore entered today were withdrawn withdrawnE E J Cilderslceve sold the stallion El Dorado to the Morida Breeding Bureau today El Dorado will do service in Dade County Jockey CountyJockey Musgrave will do J W Schorrs riding for the remainder of the Moncreif Park meeting while Guy Burns who has been riding poorly is given a rest
