TAMPA ATTENDANCE HOLDS UP Tampa Fla February 20 This marked the clos ¬ ing dav of the Panama Canal celebration festivities and though field trials between U S soldiers and sailors were counter attractions racing did not suffer In patronage one of the largest crowds Unit has witnessed the thoroughbred sport here being present when the bugle called the horses to the post in the opening dash The racing was interesting and while not profitable to the regulars proved enjoy ¬ able to the visitors who were present as mere si cc tators Several good breaks during the afternoon enabled the lavers to recoup much of their loss earlier in the week Their best break came iu the opener when Waterbnry the favorite was watcn by Malta on which Glasner scored his first success since his fall from Granger Twist Aside from Watrrburys defeat the race was noteworthy for the letting coup attempted on Michael Beck which forced the odds about him from an opening of 8 to 1 to evens The feature race of the afternoon was marred by a mishap to Carondolet The colt stumbled soon after the start and nearly unseated his rider then he stumbled again after passing the halfmile post and made a game effort by racing into forward con ¬ tention in the stretch only to falter near the end and land third place With good racing luck he might have beaten Cloisteress and Our Isugget which finished in advance of him himFlora Flora Riley had to be urged to the limit to win in the dosing dash because of interference to which she was subjected McAndrews spreadeaglcd his oneiits in the second and was the easiest winner of the afternoon Hoyie had to be driven out to outstav Fleming FlemingDr Dr C A Mackenzie formerly of Pittsburg who claims ownership in some of the horses racing in G K Brysons name has had an injunction issued to prevent Bryson from removing the horses from the track until the courts pass upon the merits of the claim According to Brysou the colts were bought by him from J B Haggin and he claims sole ownership ownershipThe The Cuban buyers secured another hatch of horses this afternoon and are in quest of more They will be used for matinee racing as well as for breeding purposes Several oldtime riders will accompany the outfit to Havana Among the riders who have signified their intention of going are T Powers T Burns Vignes and others
