WALDO WORKS SLOW FIVE-EIGHTHS. Kentucky Derby Favorite to Have Mile and a Quarter Trial Today — Topland Falls Sick. Louisville. Ky.. May 4.— Waldo, the Derby favorite, cantered five-eighths this morning in company with Dot-ante in 1 :0.s. He went the first eighth in 13f. the quarter in 2tiJ. three-eighths in : !t.l. half mile in 52*. The work was given the son of Pla-nmhs preparatory to another trial over the Derbv route tomorrow. The great colts owner. C. L. Harrison, arrived her- Pxlay from Lexington. He will see Waldo work tomorrow, and will remain here until after he fills his Kentucky Derby engagement. The track was still slow and Secretary Davis had not yet removed the "dogs" when the colt worked, so he was compelled to run far out in tlie middle of the track. Waldo showed no signs of the lameness with which he was reported to be afflicti-d. He had pulled up a trifle sore in a previous trial due to sand getting between his plate and his fixd. The lameness disappeared with the removal of the sand. C. OL Van Meter, trainer of Topland. a I«-rhy candidate, was called to Lexington this morning on account of the sickness of his colt. The son of Or lando was to have Ix-en shipped hack here todav. Mr. Van Meter was in the dark as to how serious the illness of the colt is. but In- surniisi-s that the change in the weather caused him to take a slight cold after his race with W. A. Waoh last Monday. Stalls are being bedded down at Churchill Downs for the arrival of three big strings of horses from Lexington tomorrow. The shipment is made up of J. N. Camdens stable, headed by the Derbv candidate. Roola Boola. The string of Walter Orater, in which stable is the Derby candidate. John Furlong, and the crack tillv. Goldea Egg. and the E. R. Bradley stable, a member of which is the Derbv candidate. Colinet. Work-outs today at the Downs were over a slow-ami drying-out track as follows: Baca SraadB — Three-eighths in 41. Czar— Mile in ldM.
