METTIE BEREAUD REDUCES TRACK RECORD. Runs Five and a Half Furlongs in 1:051 and Beats Good Ones at Louisville— Long Shots Score. Louisville. Ky.. May 10. — A cold wind and lowering clouds that threatened heavy rain did not deter a big crowd from journeying to Churchill Downs tilis afternoon to witness the decision of rather an ordinarv program, featured bv a handicap at five and a half furlongs. Big fields contested all of the races and Ibis accounted for decreased speculation. Several poor starts contributed to the wholesale failure of favorites. The principal upset came in tiie handicap when Mettie Bcreaud. startiifg for the first time since her arrival from Tampa, beat a smart band of sprinters including last year"s Kentucky Derby winner. Wintergrecn. Mettie Bereaud was favored by the start and. showing high speed, sprinted into a long lead nt once. She ran the first quarter in less than 23. the half under 47 and finished the distance iu l:03i. which was a fifth of a second lower than the track record made last year by Knficld. Wintergieen made a game effort to overhaul the leader, but was forced to be content with second place a goodly margin in advance of Ocean Queen. Colloquy failed to display her usual early speed ami finished badly lieaten off. Another long shot to score dining the afternoon was Snap, winner of the opener. He was also favored at the start, overhauled Billy Bodcmer when called upon and won with plenty in reserve. Wa-IKUioca. - Manretania and Aspirin, all heavily sup-IHirted. had scant chance for the purse because of their handicap at the start. Brevitcs performance in the second to land the purse was a good one. as he was away in a tangle and suffered interference on the first turn. He was forced to go wide most of the way but got up in the last strides to beat F.lizabethan. Rowland Otis, which had led up to the last seventy yards, took third. Ierinelia and Delcassy fought it" out in the third and the latter won in the closing strides. Delaneys advantage nt the send-off accounted largely for his success in the fifth race, which lie won in a canter with Louis Katz second and Fenrir Hiird. Tallahassee and Magic Miss, a promising pair from Florida, wive never serious factors because of the fioor start. Macias took another purse for Oeorge J. Iyong when lie led his field to tlie finish in the closing dash. Starter Milton is determined to force obedience on the part of the riders. He suspended jockeys Kennedy. Cole. Keogh and K. Oriffin for three days for breaking through the barrier. Beginning tomorrow and continuing for the rest ot the meeting, there wilt be . ami 0 mutuel machines in operation. The addition of the ones, it is thought, will relieve some of the congestion alxiut the liooths now so frequent. The Churchill Downs management announced this iifleipoon another stake to bo run for during this meeting. It will bo known ns tlie Decoration Han dlcap. at a mile and twenty vards. Tlie association will add .040. Tin- conditions are 0 to accun pany the nomination and 3 additional to start. Kntries will dose May 25. Most of the J. N.
