CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE LADIES STAKES Last year the Ladies Stakes was worth 1910.sh,030 net to the winner. James R. Keenes Maskette. being the greatest value in its long history. This year it will only bring to the owner of the winner ,520. the smallest return in its forty-three years oi existence. Even at that figure it is now well worth running for and will lie as heartily contested as it would lie if ten times more valuable. There is something more than in -ney in winning a race of such historical associations. Few of the high-class mares of the last forty years failed to contend for it honors and it is now the longest established stake race for three-year-old fillies of the American turf, having first been run at Jerome Park as far back as 1808.
