I b 1 REPLETE WITH MISHAPS HANDICAP AT CHURCHILL DOWNS FAR FROM BEING A TRUE RUN AFFAIR. Meadow Given Advantage at Start and Two of thft Contenders Fall — Racing Commission to Meet and Starting Rule May Be Modified. Louisville. Ky.. June 1. — A handicap at one mile, in which some of the best racers here, including the l.aloiiia llerhy candidates. Roola Koola ami John Furlong. Were starters, furnished the chief incident of this afternoons racing. Austin, who was astride John Furlong, was unseated ill some unaccountable manner while in a contending position and apatated lo have received serious injury. He was carried to the Emergency Hospital in an unconscious condition, but regained his senses after a time. Previous to Austins mishap, jockey Cole, on Hamlzaretta. had been crowded to a fall iu the race, but he escaped without a mark. Cole blamed his spill on J. Wilson. who was astride Meadow, the winner. The latter was an overwhelming favorite ami was favored by an advantage at the start that virtually gave her the race. Ocean Queen, the early pacemaker, was al-low-il to toad on sufferance. The straggling start, coupled with the many mishaps during the running, enabled Belle Clem at land third place, she being one of those to escape interference. Roola Roola landed fourth and was worked out a mile anil a quarter for the l.atonia Derby. He went the distance in 2:0Kii hamlilv. Fine weather and the prospect of good sport attracted a big crowd to Churchill Downs this afternoon. The success of a majority of the favorites contributed to their enjoyment. Labolds victory over Irincess Industry and Wolfertons unex| ected success in the closing race were disappointments. Secretary Ridwell received instructions today from Chairman lay of the Kentucky State Racing Commission to call a meeting of that body for next Saturday at Lexington. The object of the meeting was not announced, but it is saitl that a general review of racing conditions will Ik- made, a hearing to John Mai hit la grunted and the starting ruh-s modified, if not rescinded entirely.
