BARNEY SCHREIBER WINS A DERBY. Sager Finishes First in Chief Event of Opening Days Sport at Fort Erie. Buffalo. N. Y.. July 2.— The Canadian Derby, the big feature of the opening day of the Niagara Racing Associations meeting at Fort Erie this afternoon, was won by Barney SchreilMTs Bannock born — Miss Marion colt. Sager. which beat Booia Boola by a length and a half. The Schorr colt. Banives. another son of Baiiiiockburn. was third three lengths bark. Then followed Don Antonio and Thames. Polls, the other starter, fell at the half mile i otst. The race was marked by much rough riding, in which jockey Musgrave played an important part. Palms, who had the mount cm Polls, claimed that Musgrave was responsible for his accident. At the time of the mishap Polls was lapped on Banives. and Musgrave had just made his run with Sager on the outside. In the mixup Polls jumped on Banives and fell. Entering lie homestretch Banives was humped against the inside fence by the winner, and this put him out of the contest. Sager, the winner, showed it smart p«l fiMiaiallfW. and his mile and a quarter in 2 : • 5 1 represented a new track record. A tremendous crowd turned out and. with conditions perfect, the sport-loving Buffaloaians enjoyed a pleasant afternoon of racing. Well-backed horses won. three favorites aud a second choice being among the winners. Horses from John W. Schorrs stable figured prominently in the afternoons results. John Bender grast beating the odds-on favorite. Capsize, a head in tin opeaaaf dash after a furious stretch drive, aad John Reardoa making a runaway affair of the sixth race. Hie steeplechase furnished a series of mishaps, whieh ultimately led to all bets being- declared off. This resulted through tile failure of the man sta tioneil at the head id the homestretch to remove the fence at the gap leading from the field into the main track at Ihe proper time. The men who were supposed to provide the opening evidently became interested in the struggle, which was keen, and when the riders pulled for the gap they found their way barred. Expansionist was leading and Hughes was unable to pull him up. and he continued on around the next Jump. Several stable hands then rushed to the gap and removed the fence. Rergoo, Otartey and Dr. Pillow crowded their war through in a compact mass, and iu the run home Dr. Pillow shook off flic others and led at the end by a length and a half. Thirty -two layers cut in aud specalatiaa was brisk. It is the iuteutiou of the management to provide as many races as pos.-ible for the horsemen. Iiotlt Theo Cook aad Sager. eligibles for the Fourth of Julv Handicap, will pick up a five-pounds penalty. C. F. Schaunt. of Montreal, has purchased the two-year -old. Limpet, one of the colts that R. T. Wilson. Jr.. scut up from New York. Limpet has been turned over to William Shields, The latter is gathering a useful string and promises to cut an important figure in Canadian racing during the remainder of the season. Todays Toronto special was made tip of nine coaches and brought down about 1,333 racing enthusiasts.
